In 2025, President Trump and congressional Republicans passed HR 1, the budget law they named the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It is already law. Inside it is the largest cut to Medicaid in the program's history, and Medicaid is what helps about one in five Americans see a doctor.
To keep their coverage, millions of adults will now have to file paperwork proving they work eighty hours a month and re-prove they qualify twice a year. The Congressional Budget Office, Congress's own nonpartisan scorekeeper, estimates the law cuts close to 900 billion dollars from Medicaid and leaves about 10 million more people uninsured. Most of the cuts are timed to start January 1, 2027, just after the 2026 election.
This reaches far past the disability community. Medicaid pays for about four in ten births in this country, covers close to half of all kids, and is the biggest payer for nursing-home care. It is also what keeps many rural hospitals open. Working parents, newborns, grandparents, and whole small towns are all affected, not only families like ours.
