We take #vaccines VERY seriously but had to play catch-up today with our youngest and here’s why

I'm going to focus on the positive tonight. There was plenty of things that didn't go right, but the ones that did, matter more in this very moment. I mentioned earlier that Emmett had an appointment with his pediatrician today. It was a combination med check; well check and physical. We needed to touch base in regards to his ADHD and Depression medications before his care transfers to the behavioral health clinic at the main Akron Children's Hospital campus. He also needed his 11-year check-up and physical. Part of that included discussing vaccines. Emmett is the only one of our three kids who's technically behind on his vaccines. Emmett has a rare fever disorder and has had it since he was about a year old. His symptoms have evolved over…

The first solid piece of good news this week

While I'm unsure of what to make in regards to Gavin labs, there is one piece of good news we know of for sure. Ruby's visit to the vet went very well. ☺ I didn't think it would go poorly but I wasn't sure how she was going to do while being poked and prodded by the vet. Little dogs can be assholes and not big fans of meeting new people. Ruby did awesome and never had to be muzzled. She's tipping the scales at a whopping 6.6 lbs. She's heartworm free and every other worm free as well. Her vaccines are up to date and we can begin planning for her surgery sometime in late March or early April. It's all good news as far as Ruby's concerned and…

The simple, practical, and powerful reasons we chose to #vaccinate

While I will never tell someone else what to do with their child, as I would hope no one would do to us, I will share why we've chosen to vaccinate our kids. My wife and I decided very early on, that we were going to vaccinate our kids. We both have had all of our vaccinations growing up, and want to protect our kids as well. We also have a great deal of respect for our children's pediatrician, and trust her to help us give our kids the best shot at a healthy life. Shot... See what I did there? lol Aside from the common side effects like fever or redness at the injection site, none of our kids have ever had a problem. I think Elliott's arm swelled…

Watch John Oliver’s powerful and informative advice on #vaccines

Watch the brave John Oliver's powerful advice on #vaccinesI'm a huge fan of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight. Not only is he funny, but he takes on real life topics and does so in a way that presents the facts. He's brought about actual change as a result of some of the topics he's taken on. While his topics tend to be political on nature, they range from anything coal mining to standardized testing. This past Sunday however, he took on a subject that not only impacts the Autism community, but also the rest of society in general. Watch the video below and see how John Oliver takes on the topic of vaccines. The benefits of vaccines far outweigh the minuscule risks, but some parents still question their safety. John Oliver…

Fixing what’s broken within the #Autism community

One of the things that I've seen as an obstacle within the Autism community, is our ability to work together regardless of our differing beliefs. I've spoken about the major rifts that have formed and how those rifts are preventing unity.  If you've been blessed enough to not run into one of these rifts, count yourself lucky because it's not always a pleasant experience, especially for the newly initiated parents within the community who have no idea what they're walking into.  Likewise, if you haven't experienced this first hand, don't discount the validity of these words because many others have experienced these things.   These rifts have led to factions or individual groups that sorta break off and do their own thing. What leads to these secessions is often a…
