Gavin did great in Speech Therapy today

Gavin and I arrived home from Speech Therapy about 40 minutes ago and I just wanted to share that he did a really good job.   It's important to remember that doing a really good job can be relative, especially when dealing with kids on the Autism Spectrum.  People on the outside might not see why he did so well today because they lack the frame of reference, context and perspective that I do when it comes to Gavin.  That being said, he tried really hard and never lost his temper.  He completed his assignment that was due today, totally on his own and did a really good job at that.   His never give up attitude is really inspirational to those around him and for that and many other…

What I realized while watching my oldest during Speech Therapy

I'm sitting here with Gavin at Speech Therapy, listening to him through the intercom and behind to two way mirror that divide us.   He's so upbeat and happy, which is awesome.   At the same time, I'm realizing just how hard he is to understand anymore. His speech has regressed to a point that some of his speech needs to be interpreted because he just can't articulate well anymore.   It's really sad for me as a parent to experience this but at the same time, I'm so inspired by him because he just never quits and never gives up.   He's never complained about the health issues that have him locked into the course and I find that awe inspiring. How many of us would have the strength…

It was another sleepless night for this Dad

It was a rough night last night.  While the boys slept through most of it, I couldn't sleep until 4am because I was too congested.  Lizze was unable to sleep as well but ended up falling asleep on the couch.  I'm totally dragging today.  Thankfully, there are only a few appointments today and nothing else really going on in between.  I'd kill for a nap right now but I don't see that happening anytime soon.  I really grateful that the kids are doing as well as they are today because I need all the help I can get....

A heartbreaking update on Gavin

Gavin had his IVIG infusion tonight and seems to have done better this time around. He went to bed feeling fine but he's not been sleeping well. I've been watching him sit up in bed, stand up, sit back down and go back to bed.  He's done this a few times tonight and I have no clue what that's all about.  I'm not even sure how awake he is. I haven't seen him do this is in a little while so I'm hoping he'll sleep now. While we're on the subject of Gavin, I thought I should probably update everyone on what Gavin's emotional status is. In short, not so well.  He's spending more and more time alone in his room.  He's going on some really weird, borderline creepy missions.…

Maggie just got into a fight with a massive raccoon

I just let Maggie outside and not two seconds after she hit the porch, something came walking up the steps.  Maggie was gone and all I heard this really loud growling.   Next thing I know, Maggie's going absolutely crazy and she's in a fight with something.   I ran into the house to grab a flashlight and wiffle bat before dashing back out to the yard. The fight was taking place in some brush so I couldn't see what was going on.   I know a wiffle bat won't do shit but it's all I had immediate access to in the moment.  It was so loud that my neighbors came out to make sure Maggie was okay.   A few seconds later, Maggie bursts through the bushes and is…

We spent the afternoon in the gorgeous weather

Elliott was really upset when Emmett went with grandma and he had to wait until tomorrow.  If there's one thing that many kids on the Autism Spectrum struggle with, it's waiting.   I spent some time this afternoon resting cause I wasn't feeling well. It came out of nowhere but was gone as fast as it arrived.   Elliott was really struggling and asked if we could go hunt Pokémon at the garden center. I wasn't feeling a lot like walking around at the park but it was what I could do to comfort him and it worked.   All four of us ended up going and while we weren't there all day long, it was still nice to get out and enjoy the weather.   I took lots nature…

Well that was unexpected

We had a nice little surprise today.  My Mom called and wanted to come by to pick up Emmett.  She thought they could spend the day together and play boardgames, which is something Emmett loves to do.   She wants to take Elliott tomorrow and spend the day doing crafts like he loves to do.   While the boys are in school, Gavin tends to spend a lot of time with my Mom and so they'll get their time in a short while.   This was just a really nice surprise and it helped to break up the day..  ☺

It’s the end of the world. Well, it’s the end of Elliott’s Minecraft world anyway

The boys have really been into Minecraft lately and Elliott discovered mods for Minecraft PE. I warned him countless times that while mods may work, they may not always work correctly or they could even corrupt his game data, meaning he could lose all his world's.   Some of the mods began causing problems right away.  No one could join his world and he was no longer able to join our family realm.   He lived with it for a couple weeks but decided that he needed to remove all the mods and get things working correctly again.   Unfortunately, that ended up costing him the world's he's worked on for many months and he now has to begin again.  He's pretty devastated right now but it is what it…
