I have some exciting news

I mentioned yesterday, I think it was yesterday. Anyway, I mentioned that there were some things that I was really excited about but wanted to save it for a followup post and here it is. So, I'm officially recording again and I'm really excited about this new series of interviews. I've been talking to all kinds of experts during the first three seasons because I wanted to provide valuable information that could improve the lives of families, especially autism families. I'll still continue to bring valuable info but I want to do something a little different. What I'm doing now is recording conversations I have with other autism or special needs parents. These are raw, unfiltered conversations so you can expect colorful language and interesting insights into someone else's life.…

I have to be 3 places at once

The boys have school today and I have four meetings before mid-afternoon. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to pull all of this off just yet but I'm hoping for cooperation. I fully expect to be inturrupted but I'm not sure what else I can do. I have to be in three places at once. Emmett got into his first two classes but is having issues getting into his next two classes. I'm working with the school to trouble shoot and I know it's going to require my attention while I'm scheduled to do something else. While I was scrambling to help Emmett, Elliott decided to close his eyes between classes and I didn't know that. By the time I figured that out, he'd missed 15 minutes of his…

A quick update on remote learning and working from home

I was thinking this would be our first full week back at their old school but that won't be until next week due to the holiday. Elliott went back today and Emmett is back tomorrow. I think I already shared that Elliott goes to school Monday - Thursday. Emmett goes Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It's already been a more positive experience than the previous online setup. Elliott is getting much more interaction with his teachers and friends. Emmett's in the same boat. I've overheard Elliott being very involved in class and talking with everyone, much the same way he would if he was physically present. Emmett has been working on assignments on his off days and seems to be doing quite well. Remote learning means you can sometimes do your…

Balancing work and kids and school and COVID19

I'm spending way too much time on the phone today trying to manage several problems at the same time and it's just a lot bit overwhelming. While I'm on what feels like a perpetual hold, waiting for a representative to answer, I'm working on tomorrow's podcast release. The kids are really demanding my attention today and there's simply not enough of me to go around. I feel incredibly flustered right now because I can't seem to accomplish anything today. Trying to find a balance between work and kids is so difficult right now. I imagine it's only going to get more difficult as school re-enters our life. I can't record anything until my replacement Rodecaster Pro arrives today. It's being replaced under warranty and I'm sorta dead in the water…

I finally feel like I’ve put some checks in the win column

We've had a pretty good day. There have been some challenges but we made it through. I wanted to share a couple highlights from today before I go to bed. First of all, I was able to set up a temporary area in my bedroom, where I can record podcast episodes and interview guests remotely. The equipment is relatively basic but the recording quality will be increasing significantly moving forward. Also, I thought it would be cool to help my kids find their own voice and create regular or semi-regular episodes with each of my kids. All have expressed interest but Emmett is all in. Today he was practicing using the equipment and figuring out his voice. My thought is to create shorter, weekly episodes with my kids, on a…

Navigating #Divorce with #Autistic Kids

It's been a little while but Season 2 of The Autism Dad podcast is finally underway. I really appreciate your patience and understanding as I sorted through some difficult life events this year. In this first episode of the new season, I talk about one of those difficult life events. Divorce is difficult for any child but Autistic children can be more profoundly impacted by the massive changes that divorce brings to their lives. There are a few simple things we can do to help them survive and eventually adapt to this massive change in their lives. I'm by no means an expert, but I can share my personal experiences, as well as some commonsense advice. Remember to please share and subscribe on your favorite podcast app. ☺ This episode…

Are you interested in sharing your story on my #podcast?

I've been thinking about it lately and I wanted to share my plan for season 2 of The Autism Dad podcast. Season 1 consisted of 11 episodes and was my first solo venture into podcasting. It was far from perfect but was received well. I'm going to begin recording season 2 by the end of August, as soon as the kids are back in school. That's the best chance I have at a semi-quiet environment for recording. My goal is to record during the school year and then end the season when school lets out. As far as topics are concerned, this season I was to spend time giving parents a platform and a voice. I used to do this on the blog all the time but I'd love interview…

Interview with Dr.Jason Kahn of Mightier

In today's episode, I have a conversation with Dr. Jason Kahn, PhD. Dr. Kahn is a researcher from Boston Children's Hospital, an instructor at Harvard, co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Mightier. Mightier is a program that helps kids learn to self-regulate their emotions by playing video games. That means fewer emotional outbursts or meltdowns, and a reduction of parental stress. This program is absolutely amazing and works for pretty much anyone. I speak with Dr. Kahn about how Mightier was developed, the science behind is and why it works so well. If your child is struggling with meltdowns or emotional outbursts, PLEASE listen and check out Mightier. I've been using it with my youngest for almost a year and it's amazing. You can check out my full review at…
