It’s been a very long week but here’s where we are

The boys and I have had an amazing experience and we're making our way back home. I'm exhausted and looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and eating something I cook myself. The boys and I with part of the Autism team at DoubleTree. By the time you read this, we should be well on our way back to Ohio. My understanding is that it's at least 50°F colder than Orlando but I don't mind the cold. The kids are probably at their limit right now and really don't want to be in the car any longer. The trip home seems much harder than the trip to Orlando. The hours seems to kinda drag on and the kids are all doing their own thing and I'm sorta alone for…

Quick update

It's been a exhausting day and we're all spent. We need a good night's sleep before we begin the long trip home. We have a couple more things to do at the hotel before taking off, one of them being the podcast interview. We spent our last night in Florida, volunteering at Give Kids The World. I'll tell you all about that later. For tonight, I just wanted drop a quick update and let you how things are going. Elliott and Emmett would like to move here but I think they're ready to head home. They're getting a bit restless and I'm having a harder time managing them. I'm not opposed to living here and I really like the area. I can work from anywhere, because I work online. While…

This trip is exposing my limitations

So I've been on vacation with my 3 Autistic kids for a few days and I've realized a few things. For starters, my kids are amazing. There's absolutely zero question about that. I love being with them and I wouldn't trade these moments for anything in the world. This is proving to be an experience that we will not soon forget. It's not perfect though and I'm learning about my limitations as a person. Taking 3 kids on a cross country road trip can be challenging in general. Taking 3 Autistic kids on a cross country road trip and doing so alone, is unbelievably challenging. Today was particularly tough for me and I was in a horrible mood for part of it. The problem wasn't really the kids or the…

18 hours and 1,000 miles later…

I'm exhausted and can not keep my eyes open much longer but I wanted to drop a quick update. The boys and I have been traveling across the country on a journey from Ohio to Florida. After about 18 hours of driving and roughly 1,000 miles later, we're in Florida. Everyone is doing okay and I survived the trip with my sanity, mostly intact. I'll be working on some more detailed posts but I only have so much time here and I want to really focus on the experience itself. I'm so tired and I need to get some sleep be auae we have a very busy weekend a head of us. Stay tuned. I'll try to get caught up later today. For now, here's a few images from our…

This is really emotional for me

We spent a large part of the afternoon getting everything buttoned up and ready to go. The last thing I want to do is wait until the last minute. I was able to get the rest of the clothes I needed and Emmett got the rest of his. While we were at the store, we checked to see if Emmett's glasses were ready and they had literally been received a few minutes before we asked. Emmett's super excited because the transition lens are the ones that came in. He still has a second pair that hasn't arrived yet. Normally, the more expensive glasses take longer but this time, it was the other way around. He's really excited because they are adult glasses now and they're red, although it doesn't really…

Home Mortgage Options Comparison

When you are planning to retire or already retired, there is one major obstacle to overcome. That obstacle is money, or more to the point lack of money. When your income drops as a result of hanging up your work attire permanently, you need a way to get some cash flowing in again. As a homeowner, you have one obvious option. You can take out a home mortgage. What you might not know is your mortgage options expand to include reverse mortgages when you reach age 62. The Basics of the Reverse Mortgage Solution A reverse mortgage can best be summed up as a mortgage that pays you. Instead of receiving ongoing mortgage bills, you pay the money back when you can. In fact, sometimes you can receive reverse mortgage…

I took the kids clothes shopping tonight

The boys and I have had a long day. After school, we were getting some things done around the house before I took them to therapy. Therapy went pretty well and while it did get pretty emotional for a bit, everyone did well. I took the kids out clothes shopping because everyone has outgrown a lot of their clothes. Elliott and Gavin both needed new shoes and I need way more than I got for myself, but it's a start. This shopping trip was so expensive but it was necessary, whether we went to Florida or not. We're just at that stage where everyone is growing out of their stuff. I still need to get Emmett a few shirts and a few more for myself. I think Elliott is good…

Did you know caffeine hits kids with #ADHD differently?

We all know that kids with ADHD respond differently to stimulants. That's why medications like Adderall help to calm them down and help them focus. That's pretty common knowledge. Did you know that this applies to caffine as well? Emmett is very much living the ADHD life style and it can be frustratingly difficult to manage. I have found that in a pinch, or the absence of medication, coffee works amazingly well. I asked his doctor about it cause I wanted to learn more and while they don't necessarily endorse giving a child coffee, it does work. It's not like he drinks alot of coffee but on occasion I'll let him order some and it really helps to calm him down. His mom is the poster child for Adult ADHD…
