The boys are having a good day

It's business as usual today. We welcomed in a new year in and thus far have had a pretty good day. The boys are in pretty good moods today and that's always a good thing. Gavin is very talkative and exceptionally clumsy today.  Everywhere he goes, he's either dropping things or knocking something over. I'm not sure what's going on with him right now but I'm hoping it's just an off day for him. We are going to Lizze's parents for an early New Years dinner. I don't want to make it a late night because I'm tired and we have to get them back into their routine before school starts back in in a few days.

Important year end message to my readers

2016 has been a tumultuous year for The Autism Dad family, full of ups and downs. I began the year as a single father raising the boys on my own and have ended it with my family whole once again. :-) It's always so difficult for me to put together a year in review posts because there's always so much that happens and deciding what makes the cut is tough. I never know what to say that I haven't already said a million times before. For this particular entry, I'm going to try something a little different. Rather than try and list the important things that have happened, I'm simply going to share a few things I've learned this year. 2016 was a year of amazing growth for me as a person. Unfortunately,…

I’m getting worried

I'm concerned that Gavin is slipping a bit farther than he has before. He's  really struggling with even basic problem solving skills. Here's just the latest example of what I'm worried about. Gavin received a new pair of comfy pants to wear to bed or around the house. After trying them on, he came downstairs and told me that they don't fit him. He went on to explain that they were so tight, he couldn't even pull them up past his knees.  Confused by this, I asked to see them because Grandma's never wrong when it comes to the kids sizes.  When he brought them over to me, I noticed right away why they were too tight. The drawstring was tied and that's why the waist and that's why they didn't…

I’m so proud of myself

I spent the day yesterday, focusing on making better choices for myself and I did really well. I did two 30 minute sessions on the treadmill, had a 1,000 calorie deficit, hit over 12,000 steps for the first time in awhile and even did ten flights of stairs.  I feel really good and I plan on replicating this today.  This is just one of many days worth of hard work I have a head of me but it's a really good start. I'm super proud of myself and feeling very motivated to see my weight next week. :)

Fit4autism: I begin my weight-loss journey

Halfway through the day, I'm doing pretty awesome. I've already reached some of my healthier living goals for today. I've already exceeded my minimum goal of 60 minutes of activity and taken in 44oz of my 64oz of daily water. I've almost reached my bare minimum step goal of 6,000 steps for the day. Hitting 10,000 shouldn't be a problem. A few minutes ago, I finished up my first of two, thirty minute sessions on the treadmill. The second one will probably occur after dinner. Food is sorta scarce right now cause I don't get paid until tomorrow, at which point I'll hit the grocery store and pick up the list of groceries Alexa has kindly helped me put together. You can find my midday stats below.

It’s the little things

I've been doing the special needs parenting thing long enough to lose all my hair and turn my beard white.  😁 I've also been doing this long enough that I've learned to appreciate the little things in life.  Today I'm appreciating the shit out of Walgreens because they have their toilet paper on sale.  As I read back through this I realized I made an unintended pun but it's pretty funny so I'm leaving it in..  ☺

The boys have been challenging this morning

Alexa woke me up at 8am this morning (I told you I'm hooked on home automation) and that left us with about thirty minutes to get ready. At 9am, Lizze had an appointment and the boys and I were taking her there.  Elliott and Emmett have been super challenging so far but I'm hoping to work off some of their energy in the giant playroom under Dr. Pattie's office, while we wait for Lizze to finish her appointment.  There's nothing really on the schedule for today, aside from Lizze spending some time with her Mom this afternoon.  I happen to think that's a great idea and I'm more than happy to chill with the kids while she's out.  It's important that we both take time to ourselves and that's exactly…

I have a MAJOR confession to make

My wife loves watching Dr. Phil and over the years, I've picked up a few things. The biggest thing I've taken away from the many years of my wife watching his show is that you can't change what you don't acknowledge.  I'm very much aware of my being overweight but I'm having a really hard time holding myself accountable.  My thought is that if I confess my weight to all of you and share my plans for weight loss, as well as my goals, perhaps this might help me to remain motivated.  Here's the deal and the absolute humiliating truth. I weigh about 318 lbs. I carry it well but the weight is a huge problem for me.  It all began after I suffered a major, career ending back injury…
