This is breaking my heart

Emmett is absolutely miserable. The sore in his mouth is now about the size of a large pea and it's in a place that is constantly being irritated. He's spent a lot of time crying today and it's heartbreaking. I had orajel, special mouthwash and ice cream delivered at 8am and aside from the ice cream, there was no reprieve for him. The over the counter stuff doesn't seem to numb these sores and we're out of actual lidocaine. I have to call on Monday for a refill. It's so hard to see him in this much pain and be powerless to help. He can't really chew anything and when he's in these flares, he usually lives on ice cream. It's kinda like when someone gets their tonsils out, they…

Please keep Emmett in your thoughts

Emmett's in a bad way. He's hit a fever flare and this one is particularly painful. His first mouth sore popped up two days ago and there are likely more to follow. The poor kid is in a tremendous amount of pain and there's not much I can do to help. We've doubled up on his antivirals and he's swishing with salt water. There are more that will likely pop up over the next few days and he's going to be even more miserable than he already is. I was originally going to close things off here with something about having to order ice cream for him because it helps numb the sores. Unfortunately, as I was writing this Emmett came into my room in a panic. He was holding…

Avoiding conflict by encouraging my kids to communicate with each other

I spent a large part of today breaking up fights between the kids. They seem to be at each other's throats. I was just recording a speech for an upcoming summit yesterday and I mentioned something about this. I was pointing out that not everything I'm dealing with in my house is related to autism, at least not directly. There's a large portion of the daily challenge that's autism related but there's other portions that are simply typical kid behavior. The boys fighting is something that brothers do. That's pretty normal for brothers to fight and I totally get that having 3 brothers of my own. Autism tends to make things a bit more intense because of triggers and a difficulty reading body language. This is especially true when it…

I think I’ve created a monster

The boys have become very fond of baking and they are wanting to do so every single day. It's a bit much and while I'm excited they are trying new things, I think I've created little baking monsters. 😂 Yesterday, Emmett decided he wanted to bake brownies and that he wanted them to be chewy. When he was done, he brings me a plate with a huge slab of brownie on it. There was a time when I would have pounded that brownie down but not anymore. I ate about a quarter of it and thought I was gonna die. It was delicious but so heavy and I don't really eat that much anymore. That said, I'm so proud of the boys but we need to limit this a bit.…

Just one of the unique challenges that #specialneeds parents face

Gavin had a little mini emergency tonight. He had us worried for a little while but seems to be fine now. In the middle of dinner, he got a really bad migraine, I gave him Motrin and told him to go lay down. It's really hard to tell what's going on with him because he is unable to answer any questions that could help me know how to better help him. I asked him if light or sound makes his pain worse and couldn't answer that. I asked him to be more specific about where the pain is and he couldn't really do that either. This was taken pre-covid Lizze was brought in via phone to help because she lives with migraines on the daily and she might have more…

I totally got this

I want to recognize that I accomplished one of my goals for 2020. I set out to record 40 episodes for season 3 of my podcast and improve upon season 2. Today I dropped episode 40 and I'm done until next year. It feels so good to have accomplished this, especially considering l the obstacles. I've already got interviews booked for January and that's awesome. It took a little longer to get this last one out cause it's been a rough weekend but I was only about 48 hours late. ☺ The kids have been on edge today. We're getting closer to Christmas and the anxiety is building, as is the anticipation. This is historically a challenging time in our house, even when everything else is going well. Everyone's sleep…

My kids are learning to cook

Okay. I'm really trying to get back into writing more about our daily lives. There's a ton of things I don't talk about because I just lack the energy to put those experiences into words. I'm seeking to change that and as season 3 of the podcast comes to a close, I have more time to write. The podcast is so time consuming but I'm finishing up episode 40 for release today or tomorrow and I'm done for the year. With that said, here's some cool shit I want to share with you folks. ☺ It's no secret that the pandemic has been a nightmare for all of us this year. We now have a vaccine but it won't be widely available for many months. That's still a hugely positive…

My #autistic son gave himself a haircut today

I know some of you may not get how unbelievably awesome this is but I'm sure you'll be excited for Gavin nonetheless. Gavin has made it very clear that he wants to live with peers or other people his age, likely walking a similar path in life. Lizze and I have been talking about this and I feel this is a hugely positive thing, as does she. The challenge is how to navigate this and whether or not Gavin can handle it. Actually, it's more like how much independence is he capable of without serious safety concerns. Obviously, nothing can or will happen until we're in a post COVID world but that doesn't mean I can't work with Gavin to help him reach his potential while we wait. This morning,…
