Once again, Sensory Processing issues interfere with life

These sensory issues are absolutely killing me as a parent and I'm not even the one having to physically experience them. I can't image what it's like for Emmett.  We tried and tried to help Emmett work through his sensitivity to anything on his feet but we were unable to make it happen this morning.  It's extremely frustrating for Lizze and I as parents because we know that he needs to be at school. It's even more frustrating for Emmett because he wants to be at school but his body is making that very, very difficult for him.  We were somewhat pressed for time this morning because we were already late, Elliott needed to get to school and Gavin needed to have his bloodwork done first thing.  The bottom line…

My son’s sensory issues totally kicked my ass today

Mother of God, I didn't think we were going to survive this morning. Everyone was in a great mood and that's awesome. Elliott and Emmett were getting along and there wasn't any fighting whatsoever.  Let me tell ya, that almost never happens.  All of that awesomeness ended the moment it was time to put shoes and socks on. Our mission of helping Emmett tolerate his shoes and socks began about 7:15 am and we finally arrived at the school at 9:00 am.  It took almost two hours to work through the sensory issues this morning. There was so much screaming and panic over how his socks felt funny, I wouldn't be surprised if my neighbors, three doors down could hear him.  We came so close to throwing in the towel and…

I’m heartbroken over forcing my son with #Autism to go to school today

I woke up exhausted, but in a good mood. That mood carried me through until it came time to get Emmett in his shoes and socks.  Lizze worked for quite some time with him on being able to tolerate his shoes and socks. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts and massive amounts of patience, we never resolved anything for more that a few minutes.   Emmett was okay with things until he got in the car and I began making the drive to school.  At this point he's freaking out, screaming and ripping his shoes off again. This lasted the entire trip to the school and I wasn't in the best place to deal with this.  When we got to school, I had to park the car because he wouldn't get…

Show of hands, who can relate to this #Autism Parenting challenge?

It never fails that when I'm sick, tons of other shit happens at the same time, making it harder for me to rest.  I'm still not feeling good, didn't sleep well last night and Lizze is struggling to walk because of her hip. Simply waking up this morning had us at a disadvantage, right out of the gate.  Emmett had a really bad morning but not because he was doing anything wrong. He was unable to wear anything on his feet, despite exhaustive efforts to help him do so. He wouldn't even wear his flip flops.  We were almost twenty five minutes late before we even got him out to the car.  The poor kid had his shoes and socks on when we got into the car but he became…

I feel like I was hit by a freight train and left to die in the tracks

Emmett has clearly woken up on the wrong side of the bed and is not having a good morning. Shoe's and socks are presenting a major problem today and it doesn't seem like we are able to work through it like we usually do.  I'm feeling like I was hit by a freight train and left to die on the tracks.  All I have to do is get the boys to school and then I can come home and pass out. The only thing between me being able to go back to sleep, is Emmett and his shoes and socks.

It’s was a sh!tty morning for this #Autism Dad

This morning sucked. On the positive side though, both boys got to school but it was a shifty, meltdown filled morning in The Autism Dad household. Elliott was pretty hyper but mostly cooperative and that's awesome. Emmett was another story all together. He's been having a rough time falling asleep at night since Christmas break threw his routine off and we've lost most all of the progress we'd made in that area. He's not getting enough sleep and that exacerbates the sensory related challenges we face every single morning in regards to shoes and socks. It was an absolute nightmare today and we battled for at least thirty minutes before he finally kept his shoes and socks on long enough to make it out the door, into the almost 0°F…

Desensitization and helping our son with #Autism wear shoes and socks (video)

Sensory processing disorder has creeped its way into almost every aspect of our lives. Elliott, Emmett and Lizze all struggle with sensory related challenges. Gavin's doing much better as he gets older.   One of the most impactful issues revolves around Emmett and wearing clothes, in particular shoes and socks.   We've been trying a great many things for many years and have received mixed results at best.  I wanted to share a quick video of a new approach I've taken to help Emmett become more comfortable in his shoes and socks. The key here is for him not to realize what we're doing and disguise my efforts in something fun.  He loves walking on the treadmill but can't unless he's wearing shoes and socks. It's a safety thing and…

I don’t know what we’re going to do

We had a really difficult morning because Emmett would not tolerate shoes or socks once again.  I went last night and tried to find new socks that he might be more comfortable with but he wouldn't even try them on. This morning however, he was finally able to put on one of the pairs of new socks but would not tolerate any type of shoe over top of them.  After about 90 minutes of exhaustive effort, we finally got him to wear his slippers. He wasn't happy about it but it happened.   The battle to reach that point was horrible. The screaming was overwhelming for us but the whole thing was beyond overwhelming for Emmett.  This thing is heartbreaking and I don't know what else to do.  Nothing works. …
