Behavioral Crisis: Emergency Pysch Evaluation (09/29/2012)

Gavin is having a behavioral crisis and will be on his way for a psych evaluation and God willing,  a psych hold. He had probably one of the worst,  self-injurious tantrums to date.  I'll explain in more detail what lead up to this later. Right now,  Lizze's Mom is going to drive them up to Akron Children's Hospital.  He will be run through the behavioral heath side of the ER and evaluated for admittance. The bad news,  aside from all of this,  is that nothing is going to change by taking him.  The good news is that this will get him out of the house and into a safer environment.  This is best for everyone,  especially those most traumatized by his behavior,  Elliott and Emmett. I ask that you please…

I think we’re getting a break today

I believe that Lizze's parents are going to be taking Gavin and Emmett for the day and overnight as well. :-) This will give Elliott a desperately needed break and hopefully he can relax and finally feel better. I imagine that he will enjoy some Portal 2 time without his brothers interrupting.  At this point,  I don't care if he plays all day,  so long as he is physically resting on the couch.  He's already missed an entire week of school because of these bugs. He needs to get better. Lizze also needs a break from the constant stress of one Mr.  Gavin. Emmett will have fun playing with Grandpa and they will closely supervise Gavin. This is hopefully going to be a break for everyone. This was posted via…

I’m so embarrassed

Do you know anyone that just let's it all hang out? I do.  In the Lost and Tired family,  Bella, our Boxer puppy, doesn't seem to have any problems with exposing herself to the world. I'm almost too embarrassed to share this with you all.  However, this would have eventually leaked to the internet anyway. I guess I just wanted to stay ahead of it.  I assure you, Bella is going into treatment and this kind of smutt will not happen again.  We are so embarrassed and apologize if Bella has offended anyone. I’m proud of myself because……

Sometimes we have to really take stock of what we accomplish. So often, I think we all are weighed done by all we don't manage to do. Instead,  we should focus on what we did well.  For example....  I'm super proud of myself for not stress eating last night.  I was plenty stressed out but I didn't eat.  I opted instead to have a cup of hot tea. That wasn't easy for me to do, but I did it.  I thought it would be nice to share what we are proud of ourselves for. I really think it's important to keep perspective. Do you ever get frustrated?

One of the things that I find really frustrating bout special needs parenting has to do never being able to get anything done. Obviously I get some things done,  but there are many things that aren't related to my kids that never seem to happen. Today however,  I managed to actually get some things done. I had an article due today and I got it done, with time to spare. You'll be able to read it next week.  :-) I also got some cleaning done as well. I wish I could get more done so I could see more visual progress but I'll take what I can get. At least I got the writing done,  that was really important. Do you ever get frustrated when you can't seem to get…

Gavin’s having chest pain

Gavin started having chest pain a short while ago. His heart rate was bouncing between 56bpm and about 130bpm. That's definitely not a good thing. We have begun making plans to get him to the hospital, should we need to. We will have to divide and conquer since the E's are still sick. At the moment, Gavin is resting in bed. We're really, really hoping he will stabilize after lying down and taking the load off of his heart. The last thing anyone needs right now is another autonomic crisis. So far its borough his heart rate down and the chest pain has subsided. Hopefully, that will continue to be the case. Please keep Gavin in your thoughts and prayers again this afternoon . Thank you This was posted via…

Let’s talk about Depression

This seems to always be a popular topic when I bring it up. I’ve talked about this many times but have never opened up the floor and actually had a dialogue about Depression.

I thought I would share some basic facts about depression from the Mayo Clinic which is a very, very trusted source of information.

Before I get into the clinical aspects I wanted to explain my reasons for doing this.

Special needs parenting is not easy and anyone that says it is, well, is much stronger than me anyways. My concern is that Depression is much more common in the special needs community than we hear about. In fact, no one seems to ever talk about Depression, so who knows how many people are dealing with this in secret.

The truth is that it makes me sad to think that people suffer in silence, especially when it’s due to fear of judgment or ridicule. No one should ever have to suffer in silence.

There is no reason we can’t talk about Depression in an open, honest way. In fact, the only way I think we can shake off the stigma is to do just that, talk about it.

Depression is not a weakness and absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Please don’t suffer in silence anymore. You’re not alone and there are plenty of people like you and me out there. 🙂

For today’s #Autism Discussion I want to have an open and honest dialogue about Depression and how it impacts our lives. I realize that this may be a touchy subject for some but perhaps talking about it with people who understand can really help.

How does Depression affect your ability to parent your child with #Autism?

Are you concerned that you may be Depressed?

Please feel free to ask questions or even answer them. Remember that this DOES NOT CONSTITUTE MEDICAL ADVICE. We are simply sharing our own personal experience.

Kids say the cutest things

I was taking video of Emmett eating yogurt. Sounds like a weird thing to film but this is the first time he's been allowed to eat it because until now, he's had significant food allergies to milk, lactose, soy and egg. He was really excited to get to eat what his big brothers eat, since he is now officially allergy free. I didn't realize that Emmett was going to say something really cute at the times but I'm glad I was able to capture it. I was thinking that we could share some of the really cute things our kids have said.
