Navigating the nursing home with my #Autistic kids isn’t easy

I wanted to share a special moment from the other day. As you may recall, we recently lost Lizze's grandmother, my grandfather and now my grandmother is in heart failure. She's moved into a nursing home about five minutes away. She's been there for a couple of months, and it's been a difficult transition for her. The positive is that she's now safe, well cared for and much closer. She used to live ninety minutes away, and that made it so hard to see her when especially with our car. Anyway, we try to visit her as close to every day as we can. It's a difficult journey with the kids because her memory is not very good anymore and the other day, it didn't seem like she remembered us.…

Did you know that #CBD for pets is a thing now?

I've always been fascinated by science, especially medical science. When I was a kid, I used to love reading the medical advances section of Readers Digest. I’ve a big believer in western medicine, but my eyes have recently been opened to other options. I've mentioned before that we've been exploring CBD products for Lizze in hopes of helping her better manage her chronic pain, including migraines. Traditional medicine wasn’t helpful, and after years of not being able to find any meaningful relief, something happened. Ohio recently legalized medicinal marijuana, and Lizze was able to obtain her Ohio medical marijuana card a few months ago. It's pretty much changed her life. CBD oil, which is THC free, has been very helpful as well. She only tried it in two forms, gummies…

Sometimes I need to feel normal

I'm going to put aside all our problems for today because Avengers: Endgame is out and we're going this afternoon. The kids get out of school at 3 PM, and we're going to head straight to the theater. I hate using the word normal, but the truth is, sometimes it's important to feel normal. Sometimes it's beneficial to get away from everything that's making life stressful and forget about our problems, even if it's only for a few hours. The kids have had a rough couple of weeks, and we've always made it a point to go see the Marvel movies as a family. We don't get to do a ton of cool things but this is something we can pull off, and the kids love every minute of it.…

A gentle reminder about Autism Awareness

Okay, folks, it's Autism Awareness Month, and there are a million ways to celebrate. Everyone is different, and raising awareness can take many forms. I've been very vocal about my feelings about this over the years. I feel it's so important that we focus on the people and less on the large organizations during the only time of year when people are paying closer attention. The truth is, you can raise awareness is countless ways. I'm a huge fan of sharing personal experience because it's a great way to help people form a more emotional connection and that helps them better relate. Some people screw in blue light bulbs, and that's okay too. Some people like to more subtly raise awareness year-round with things like Autism Awareness ribbons, magnets and…

Update: How I’m managing my #Depression

As many of you know, I've been warring with Depression for most of my life. I talk about managing Depression as an ongoing war because there will be many battles, some I'll win and some I won't. Recently, I decided that I needed to get more help in managing my Depression because I was significantly struggling in many areas of my life. I was working very hard to manage my Depression, but it just wasn't enough. One of the things I had been trying to do was manage my Depression as naturally as I can, meaning I wanted to limit medication use, if possible. You may recall my nightmarish withdrawal from Paxil last year. I was sick for almost six months after taking three months to taper off slowly. It…

This unfortunate animal cracker led to a very awkward conversation with my youngest

For starters, we're dealing with an unexpected change in routine this morning. School was canceled because so many people are sick. There is strep throat, another unknown viral thing but there are also several confirmed cases of flu in the school. I can't stress enough just how important it is to get your flu shot every year. People actually die from the flu so get it done. 😉 Anyway, Lizze and I were sitting in the living room this morning, contemplating what to do with our day when we heard a ton of commotion from the boys room. I assumed they were fighting again because that's sorta their default setting at times and they're both thrown off by there being no school. As I stopped what I were doing and…

My wife finally got her medical #marijuana card and here’s how it went

We had a really interesting day today and actually, it was quite positive. We made some major progress in our quest to find Lizze some relief from all that she suffers from. I mentioned in a sorta offhand way recently, that Lizze has been using CBD oil and is scheduled to be evaluated for a medical marijuana card. Medical marijuana has recently been legalized in the State of Ohio and since we've literally tried everything conventional to help her with her migraines, this was all we had left to try. The CBD oil has been helping but the goal is to have both options available in order to best ensure a better quality of life. Her appointment was yesterday and it went well. I'll let her go into the details…
