Sometimes I swear that life is out to bury us alive

It's been an exhausting day, full of repetitive questions, meltdowns and schizophrenic hallucinations. We also had a pretty awesome victory. The Good news first... Emmett graduated from his Functional Independence Group after 6 weeks and I'm so proud of him.  I'm also very grateful that he was given the opportunity to attend this awesome pilot program by Akron Children's Hospital. That's pretty much where the good news end because the rest is a mixed bag of good, bad and ugly. The rest of the day was spent listening to Gavin talk about his latest missions with his visibly challenged group of super best friends.  It's not that I don't want to listen to him but it's really hard to hear this because it's a massive reminder of how serious his mental…

Here’s a long overdue update about many things

Sometimes it's hard for me to write. This is the case for a number of reasons.  Depression,  exhaustion, life and a few other things, all have a role but I thought I would spend some time today, playing catch-up. While I try to share as much as I can in regards to our life, there are way more things that go on that just never make it to the blog. There's not a reason for this it just sorta happens. I get questions all the time about things that people have been waiting to hear updates about and I'm finally in a place to sit down and get everyone caught up on some of the things I haven't talked about in awhile. Maggie You may recall that shortly before school…

We made a difficult decision about Gavin’s current emotional status

I meant to publish this update the other day but I've been a bit distracted. Lizze and I met with Dr. Pattie on Tuesday night to discuss what we should do in regards to Gavin's current psychotic break.  The reality is that there is very little that we can do, aside from possibly adjusting his meds. The decision basically revolves around whether or not to increase his Clozapine dose. While this may not seem like a tough decision, it really is for a number of reasons. Clozapine is not a medication to be messed with, if it can be avoided.  That being said, it's also the only medication that has a history of actually working on Gavin.  It either quiets the voices or makes them silent all together. Gavin is…

We made some awesome progress today

We've spent the majority of the day so far, cleaning and straighting up. My Mom came over to help and I think we're pretty much done.  There's a few things left to do but nothing major. Gavin's slept for most of the afternoon thus far.  That's a bit strange and makes me wonder if he's sleeping well at night.  Normally he'll take a nap for about an hour or so after taking his morning meds but today he was out for several hours. I'll have to go back and check my alerts to see how many times he got up last night. I know of several times for sure but he seemed to go right back to bed. Anyway, he slept for awhile today. Emmett spent hours and hours just…

Today was pretty horrible but we lived to tell about it

Today has been such a long, both emotionally and physically draining day. Before and after Emmett's emergency dental appointment, I didn't see much of Gavin.  He spent most of his free time in his room. The only time he really spent time amongst his family was after dinner, while he was receiving his IVIG infusion. When he gets his infusion, he likes to sit in the same exact spot and practice the exact same routine.  If anything shakes up that routine, he panics and for that reason, we do our best to ensure everything stays as close to the same each time he gets his infusion. Poor Emmett has been so tired after his dental procedure today. He fell asleep in the car on the way home and has been…
