I had to really prepare Emmett for his doctor appointment today

Emmett did really well at his impromptu doctor appointment this morning. He needed to be seen because he's running a fever and presenting with what looks like strep throat. Poor Emmett won't talk because it hurts too much and Advil doesn't seem to help. Anyway, on the way to the appointment I prepped a nervous Emmett for what would most likely be a throat swab. He hates those and I don't blame him, No one likes those but in Emmett's case, it's a sensory challenge. I figured that would likely be the worst case scenario and I was right. He kept backing away from the nurse but ended up doing awesome. We immediately distracted him and got him giggling. Fun fact, Autism parents become masters in the art of redirection…

Emmett is absolutely miserable and will see the doctor this morning

Just got back from taking Elliott to school and Gavin for his blood work. Emmett has an appointment at 10:30 AM to make sure he's not dealing with strep (which is a frequent friend of his). It's a good thing we scheduled the appointment because his fever is climbing and he's over 101°F now. He's not talking because his throat hurts so bad and with the fever, it feels like maybe it's strep throat. That would explain everything but is easily treated and he should be feeling better soon. Again, assuming it's strep throat. It's so hard to know what's going on because running a fever doesn't necessarily mean anything when it comes to Emmett. He runs fevers all the time and he's not sick. When he has symptoms that…

I’m worried

Emmett isn't feeling well this morning. His throat has been bothering him for the last day or so. He woke up in tears about 4 AM because it hurt so bad. He's not talking and may be actually running a fever. I say maybe because he's pushing 101°F but he also has a fever disorder and he runs fevers for no reason. Unfortunately, he won't be in school today as a result. If he feels better, then I'll get him there later. Emmett loves school and hates staying home. If he ever wants to stay home, something is definitely wrong. The school is working with us and Emmett is staying current with his work. His grades are impacted and we have a general doctor's note sorta covering the health issues…

Emmett’s test results came back and their very frustrating

About mid-afternoon, right before I picked Elliott up from school, Emmett's doctor called. I had left a message because we were notified that Emmett's results came back but the page that was supposed to contain the results was blank. Apparently, it was a glitch in the MyChart app. Either way, I needed them to read the results to me. Emmett was recently tested for milk and egg allergies. He used to be allergic both but he outgrew them a while ago. We wanted to make sure they hadn't begun giving him problems again because if they were, it could explain his stomach issues. At the same time, he was also retested for celiac as well. He was negative at an early age but since it runs in my family, we…

Poor Emmett didn’t make it through the day

After waiting in the school parking lot for an hour, I went in to check on Emmett. He was in martial arts at the time and we went down to check on him. He was practicing with weapons for the upcoming tournament, which he's incredibly excited about. I could see from a distance that he was struggling and when he came over, he was almost in tears. It broke my heart to see him like this. He was trying so hard to make it through the day but he asked if he could come home. Everyone agreed that he should go home and after picking up his things, some school work, and saying our goodbyes, we were on our way. I'm glad I stayed because it sorta expedited the process…

It’s killing me to see Emmett like this

Lizze and I have been bombarded with challenges this morning. Right now, I'm going to focus on the Emmett related ones. Emmett woke up not feeling well again, and struggling to get off to school. We're trying to find a balance between getting him to school and keeping him home because he's in too much pain or discomfort. It's not easy but thankfully, Emmett desperately wants to be in school, so if he ever doesn't want to go, we know something is wrong. Lizze tackled lunches and I worked with Emmett to come up with a plan that got him to school but that he was comfortable with. He ended up being willing to try for a little while. We got to school and I spoke with the office, his…

I don’t know what we’re going to do because Emmett keeps getting sick when he eats

This post was originally meant to publish on Friday morning. This morning was a fucking nightmare. We're trying to work with Emmett to figure out why he's not feeling well, and at the same time, keep him in school as often as possible. His grades aren't an issue but new, very strict truancy laws are. Emmett woke up this morning and wasn't feeling well. His stomach was upset again and he was unable to eat. We've known about these stomach aches for a long time and we've been treating them as though are related to stress because we've ruled other medical issues out. It turns out that Emmett is getting nauseated everytime he eats. Sometimes this also results in abdominal pain but it's not indicative of anything specific. Autism, sensory,…
