A meltdown inducing dentist appointment today

We have an exciting day planned and by exciting I mean not fun at all. Mr. Emmett is returning to the dentist this afternoon because he has a baby tooth that needs fixed. When he was at the dentist a month ago, we discovered that he had the start of a cavity on the front of the tooth that had been in contact with his metal cap. The cap had left a mark on the tooth in question and the dentist wants to fix it before it can become a problem. It's minor enough that he shouldn't need to be numbed up or anything like that. I know it's a baby tooth but that tooth is not ready to come out and we don't want there to be any problems.…

Yes there was a meltdown but I’m still super proud

We had another rougher morning with Mr. Emmett today. He was thrown off for a couple of reasons. For starters, he forgot to do his take-home work from yesterday. He was very upset with himself for that but he never forgets that kind of stuff. Secondly, he was going to school by himself because Elliott will be at Akron Children's Hospital today for an appointment. All of this culminated into a big old meltdown. Thankfully, Emmett was able to work through it. He got his work done and went to school on his own. When he hopped out of the car, he had a smile on his face and was in a good place. I reminded him on the way to school, that I was very proud of him. I…

Sensory processing issues get in the way again

Trying to get the kids ready for school can be like herding cats at times. There are a million reasons for that. Sometimes it's pretty kid typical and just not wanting to get out of bed, or simply dragging their feet while getting ready. Other times it can be more Autism related in nature. This morning was delayed by sensory issues once again. Mr. Emmett was having issues with his sock on his left foot. It took quite some time to help him work through it. He kept saying that it felt like something was snagging his sock. He was getting really upset because he didn't want to be late but he was simply unable to put his socks on. He didn't wear socks to school for many years but…

An uncomfortable night’s sleep on our dilapidated couch

After an insanely uncomfortable night's sleep on our dilapidated couch, I woke to Emmett feeling much better. He had a really difficult night and ended up puking. Emmett finally fell asleep on the recliner and I passed out shortly after he did. He's feeling much better but I'm having him take it easy just in case. I'm really hoping last nights stomach issues were simply something he ate. This poor kid can't catch a break but he's feeling better and that's something.

We just can’t catch a freaking break

We were able to get all our running around done today without too many problems. Gavin had some problems but nothing we couldn't handle. He had an off day and just seemed like he was lost. I don't know what's going on with him but hopefully, he'll be in a better place in the morning. Unfortunately, the day went downhill after we picked up the boys and brought them home. Emmett wasn't feeling well and we tried to get him to rest. He was absolutely miserable at bedtime and had a rough time falling asleep. While he did eventually drift off, he woke up shortly after and was definitely feeling worse. He came downstairs in tears and we made him comfortable on the couch. After about an hour, he ended up puking…

We’re praying this finally helps Emmett with his pain

Today's trip to the immunologist was very trying for me personally. It felt absolutely chaotic and frustrating because everyone was experiencing some degree of anxiety. That made them difficult to manage as well as very, very loud. I always find it odd how my kids can be very sensitive to sound and yet outrageously loud at the same time. Aside from the appointment and the drive being overwhelming for me, the results of the appointment were relatively positive. Just so we're clear, everyone behaved really well and cooperated as best they could. This was a big ask for them and truthfully, it went really well. It was just a lot for me. The staff loves seeing everyone and it's like their major event for the day. I was just overwhelmed…

There was blood everywhere and it looked like a crime scene

This morning has been a fucking nightmare. All I needed to do was get everyone to the doctors. We were all going to the same place. I was mentally prepared for the challenges associated with that because most of them are predictable.. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. We're trying to get everyone ready to leave and Emmett gets so stressed out over his clothes that he has a massive meltdown. This was totally a sensory thing and outside of his control. That massive meltdown led to a massive nose bleed that took me forever to get under control. There was blood everywhere and it looked like a crime scene. Both sides of his nose bled and that's a first for us. Emmett has been struggling with nose bleeds for…

I’m embracing this moment for as long as I can

Emmett is feeling better this morning and that's awesome. He can't return to school today though because he has to be clear of a fever for 24 hours and he hasn't been yet. If he remains fever free at lunchtime, he'll be good. ☺ Tomorrow we will be at his specialist in Cleveland for a follow-up. This is important because his fever cycles are becoming more frequent and that's causing him a great deal of pain. We also need to discuss the possibility that he's got something called cyclic neutropenia rather than PFAPA. Frankly, aside from accuracy, I don't know if it even matters. I don't believe there's a treatment for cynic neutropenia and we know there isn't one for PFAPA. The only reason it would matter is if treatment…
