#Autism: Perhaps we should focus on our differences after all

As an Autism parent and advocate, I find myself frustrated that we (Autism Community) can't seem to get along with each other. That’s not to say that no one ever gets along.  It's just that I still witness quite a bit of fighting amongst ourselves because we don't see eye to eye. I've never been one to cram my beliefs down anyone's throat but I feel very strongly about this and wanted make my voice heard. You would think or at least hope, that with all the effort we (collectively) put into educating the world about Autism, that some of that would rub off on us. Apparently, that's not always the case. Earlier this week, I asked a question. If you could remove Autism from your child, would you? Why…

The same old song and dance

There are times that I get really, really frustrated with Gavin because he just doesn't listen.  One of the things that has become an daily struggle is the way he eats.  Gavin inhales his food.  Tonight I gave him a plateful of chicken nuggets for dinner and he literally was done before I could finish passing out dinner to the other kids. I'm so tired of constantly telling him to slow down.  Supposedly, this is typical of people with Autonomic Dysfunction because the moment food hits their stomach, they become incredibly sleepy. The faster they eat, the more they can get in before sleep overwhelms them. I totally get that.  The problem is that Gavin's been choking on his food more often lately and the faster he eats, the more…

Phineas and Ferb at Grandma’s House

We had to go to my parents house to let the dog out while they were out today. The first thing the kids do is take advantage of the cable TV and turn on Phineas and Ferb. It's one of the rare times they get to watch the new episodes.  :-) This site is managed almost exclusively from my Galaxy S4. Please forgive any typos as autocorrect HATES me. ;-) Follow @Lost_and_Tired "Like" me on Facebook Visit the My Autism Help Forums To reach me via email, please Contact Me   Setup of an account with Bluehost and I get paid. Elliott’s first book report

So Elliott's working on his first ever book report. He choose rondos his report on hedgehogs. When we visited the Cleveland Zoo this summer, they had a hedgehog that he could pet. He became smitten. :-) We took him to the  library to get a few books on hedgehogs and he's been reading over them. Part of this project requires that he draw a hedgehog as well as cut it out and use it for a visual. This is a picture of the magic happening. Elliott drew some really cute hedgehog pictures. I thought I would share them with you. :-) This site is managed almost exclusively from my Galaxy S4. Please forgive any typos as autocorrect HATES me. ;-) Follow @Lost_and_Tired "Like" me on Facebook Visit the My Autism Help…

More like warring factions than brothers

I don't know about your kids but mine don't seem to be getting along this morning.  In fact,  they are acting more like warring factions than brothers.  I suppose this is normal, at least to some extent but that doesn't exactly make it easier to cope with. They just seem to be pushing each others buttons today and I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps they are trying to drive me insane? Maybe they smell my weakness and sense my fear? Whatever the reasons, I'm feeling like this is going to be a long day. :-( This site is managed almost exclusively from my Galaxy S4. Please forgive any typos as autocorrect HATES me. ;-) Follow @Lost_and_Tired "Like" me on Facebook Visit the My Autism Help Forums To reach me via email,…

The boys let us sleep in :-)

The boys woke up at the buttcrack of dawn once again.  This time however, the gods of sleep were looking out for us, and thankfully took pitty on us. All three of the boys occupied themselves for several hours.  They waited until a more reasonable hour of 8am before insisting it was time for breakfast. Can you say awesome.. Team Gavin: Medication Update

During our last appointment with Dr. Moodley at the Cleveland Clinic, there was a medication change that was scheduled to take place today. One of the treatments for Gavin's Autonomic Dysfunction is Ativan.  Gavin was taking Ativan at .5mg in the morning and .25mg at night.  The morning dose is a contributing factor to Gavin falling asleep after breakfast. Today was the last time he's taking Ativan as a preventative measure. From now on, Ativan will only be used during a crisis.  As long as Gavin remains stable, this will stay in effect.  If anything changes, we will speak with Dr. Moodley and reevaluate.  This change should make the mornings at school a bit easier for Gavin... :-) This site is managed almost exclusively from my Galaxy S4. Please forgive any…

I have reason to be positive

We have officially ended the third week of school.  All three of the boys are doing pretty well and I'm super stoked to be able to tell you that.  I'm so proud of them and excited that they are adjusting so well.  We've had a few hiccups along the the way but nothing that we couldn't handle.  I'm feeling like we have finally begun hitting our groove.  I can honestly say that I'm very hopeful that we are going to have a great school year.  I've got reason to have a very positive outlook. :-) This site is managed almost exclusively from my Galaxy S4. Please forgive any typos as autocorrect HATES me. ;-) Follow @Lost_and_Tired "Like" me on Facebook Visit the My Autism Help Forums To reach me via email,…
