The Truth is I’m Not Okay

I swear to God it feels like I’m always apologizing for not writing enough. I don’t know why I feel the need to do that but clearly I do. I guess that I feel as though I’m letting people down when I don’t write or share. That’s just a weird thing I put on myself though. If I don’t write for a period of time, I start getting messages from people checking up on me. Sometimes that's how I end up realizing that it’s been awhile. Anyway, because I’m me and feel the need. I’m sorry it’s been so long since we’ve talked. I'm just going to run with this but truthfully, my heads a mess and I'm not sure what direction this is going to take. Usually there’s a…

Review: The Ambush #Mosquito Trap

I was just talking about working in the yard and looking forward to being able to relax and unwind after a long day. Maybe enjoy a nice bonfire or even a cookout on the front porch. We've been putting a lot of effort into getting the outside of the house repainted, as well as some landscaping projects done. I still have yet to decide whether I'm going to paint the porch floor or put new indoor outdoor carpet down. Who knows, I have a lot on my plate and I'm okay with taking my time right now. It's a process but we're well underway. I don't know where you live but I'm in Ohio and the mosquitos have been absolutely horrible this year. Just taking the dog outside or cutting…

Let’s Talk About Respite

I want to talk about something that's really important and most parents don't get enough of. If you're a special needs parent, you're probably all too familiar with the word respite. Basically, respite means break. More specifically, it means a temporary break and is usually associated with caregivers. While my focus is more on special needs parenting, this really applies to any parent because we all need to take care of ourselves and we all need a break from time to time. Many of you know that respite is hard to come by for many caregivers, myself included. While my kids are older and can stay home alone for periods of time, that's relatively new and wasn't always like that. They can't stay home overnight by themselves and while that…

Pain can be exhausting

I spent most of yesterday painting with my Dad, as we're working on the outside of the house. Since I've gone back to working out, I've had a flare up of tendonitis in right arm. It's not a huge deal but it's painful and impacts the use of my right arm a bit. My back is also sore from working over my head while painting. Thankfully, it's not too bad. Between my arm and my back, I'm exhausted and I feel rundown. It's crazy the impact pain can have on someone. When I'm in this much pain, I tend to be quiet and far less outgoing. I am feeling a bit better today but I'm looking forward to receiving the tendonitis band I ordered because that will provide a great…

Do parents ever really clock out?

One of the things about being a parent is that you never really get to clock out. Being a parent is a 24/7/365 kinda job. While it's true that it can be exhausting, it's also absolutely worth it. Recently, I found myself with a bit more freedom because my kids are gaining more and more independence. That's truly a great thing and I'm very grateful for the new found freedom and I'm incredibly proud of my kids' newly discovered independence. As a parent, when you gain a bit of freedom, it's like fresh oxygen in your lungs. It's invigorating and exciting. I'm pretty sure kids feel something similar as they gain greater levels of independence. As amazing as it is, it's not an exact science and there are still moments…

#Autism Parents: 4 Tips for Moving Somewhere Where You Don’t Know Anyone

I've talked about wanting to move for years. We need a bigger house and I'd like to be a bit farther away from the city, but there are so many things to consider before moving, especially when you have children with a diverse set of needs. Over the years I've talked to so many parents who found themselves in a position where moving was necessary but didn't know anyone at their new location. That can be scary and overwheming to say the least. You might be asking yourself, why would someone move to a place where they don't know anyone? The reality is that sometimes families have to move in order to locate services that their child needs. I've been asked many times for advice on how to handle situations…

I’ve been thinking and it’s time for change

I have been thinking a lot recently, and I have made a decision. I want to take a few minutes and talk about it. This blog is pushing 12 years of age, and it's seen a great deal of change over the years. It started as Lost and Tired and evolved into what you see today. The evolution was necessary and, in many ways, a continuing process. One of the things that I have struggled with, especially as the kids got older, is privacy. When they were little, I was comfortable sharing more personal things because they we so young. As they get older, trying to balance sharing meaningful information and privacy, has been more challenging. If I'm candid, that's a large part of why I don't write as often…
