Autism and Akron Children’s Hospital

Tomorrow is a pretty big day.  I will be at Akron Children's Hospital for the second time this week.  This time,  I will be there with Mr.  Elliott Richard.  We actually have two appointments tomorrow.  The first appointment is with the developmental neurologist and the second is with the immunologist.  Elliott will be going through the Autism clinic and the developmental neurologist is the gate keeper so to speak.  She will do the evaluation and decide how we proceed.  They will also rule out ADHD and dyslexia.  The immunologist is a simple follow up and nothing more. Both of these appointments should be relatively uneventful but Elliott is really stressed out about going.  If you're thinking "sounds like a squishy couch kinda night",  you would be right.  We are currently…

Today’s Victory: 11/30/2011

Today's Victory is brought to you because Mr.  Emmett John requested milk with his cereal and actually ate it.  Of course,  it was chocolate soy milk as he's allergic to cows milk but this is still a pretty big victory.  Typically,  Emmett doesn't like things mixing and so he usually ears his cereal dry.  His willingness to do this show just how far he's cone over the past year.  Hell freakin' yeah Emmett,  keep up the good work.  Daddy loves you..

OT for 11/30/2011

Emmett had OT this afternoon.  He did a really good job.  His schedule was switched around but he did well with the change.  He even tried the hotdog swing,  which is something,  I don't believe he has ever tried.  Despite how overwhelmingly tired I am,  I pretty stoked that I got to see that today.  Great job Mr.  Emmett John :-)

Bad Wednesday

I finished the running around and shuttling the boys to school this morning.  I dealt with the doctors at pain management for Lizze and then the insurance company.  I had just settled down on the couch because of exhaustion and not feeling well.  I turned on Call of Duty and started to play.  Nest thing I know,  Lizze comes downstairs and tells me that the school just called. Apparently,  Gavin is sick and I needed to go get him. Gavin stomach wad upset and he was pale. While I was walking hin out to the car,  he said he was better and wanted to stay.  I decided it was best that he come home and go to bed.  This may be a side effect of the increase in Clozapine.  Today…

Sexually Agressive Addressed

I had my meeting with Dr.  Pattie last night and we let the boys play while I got her up to speed.  I explained all of what was going on and we discussed how best to handle it.  We decided that my idea of catching Gavin off guard was the best approach.  We sat the boys down and Dr.  Pattie asked Elliott to explain what had happened.  Elliott very calmly explained what happened and how it made him feel.  Meanwhile, Gavin is freaking out and winding up for a big meltdown. During this time,  Elliott just started talking about all the things that Gavin does to him that upsets him.  Gavin,  at first,  denied everything.  However,  his response confirmed what Elliott was saying.  Gavin was given a chance to talk…

Addressing sexually aggressive behavior

Today I'm meeting with Dr.  Pattie,  the boys therapist.  Topic for the day is going to be sexually aggressive behavior.  I want to address Gavin and Elliott both because Gavin needs to know that he cannot do this type of thing and Elliott needs to know that this type of thing should not be happening to him. I want Elliott to understand that this is not his fault.  Gavin will be caught off guard but I think that's the best approach for him.  Gavin needs to understand boundaries and that he does not have the right to ever touch anybody in this type of way.  He does not have the right to ever, ever touch another person without permission simply because he wants to.  This will have to be very…

A first time for everything

What happened today,  has never happened to us before.  Lizze and I were both trying to remember back but I honestly think this is the first time this has ever happened. As you know,  we were doing to Akron Children's Hospital today so Gavin could see the ENT.  We thought he was going to need surgery to have his tonsils and adnoids removed.  We were referred here by immunology because his sinus issues hadn't improved in the almost 5 months he has been receiving antibody infusions and there was concern that tonsil and adnoid issues may be behind that. Dr.  Milo checked out Emmett first.  I'm pleased to report that Emmett has made a full recovery and as far as the ENT is concerned,  nothing else needs to be done. …

Does Gavin need surgery?

We have arrived at Akron Children's Hospital so that Gavin can have his surgical consult and Emmett can have his surgical follow up. Gavin still has chronic sinusitis so there is talk of removing his tonsils and adnoids.  Hopefully,  we will make it through this and not have more to worry about.  However,  with a child as......unique as Gavin...you just never know what to expect. Positive thoughts..at least I trying..right?  :-)
