Problems dealing with repetitive questions

When you're a parent to an #Autistic child you may find yourself dealing with repetitive questions from your child. For those who aren't familiar with the joys of repetitive question asking,  let me explain. Repetitive question asking is when a person asks the very same question,  over and over again. In my son Gavin case,  sometimes it will be the exact same question over and over again or other times he'll ask the same question over and over but in different ways. Aside from literally driving me crazy,  there is another problem that I have found when trying to curb the repetitive questioning. When Gavin constantly repeating himself,  after awhile I came no longer ignore it.  I have to correct the behavior before I lose my mind. I remind him…

Addressing #Autism’s misconceptions with creativity

There is so much misconception in the world about #Autism.  There is an assumption that kids in the spectrum are somehow less intelligent than their typical peers.  This however,  couldn't be farther from the truth. Kids on the #Autism spectrum are among the smartest there are. What I think happens is that people make assumptions based on a child's behavior or ability to talk. That is a horrible mistake. While it's true that kids with #Autism can be challenging, present with major behavioral problems or maybe not be able to speak,  that it not a reflection of who they are on the inside. My kids,  while extremely challenging,  are both super smart and very creative. Today I want to share Emmett’s latest creation.  I can't remember what these blocks are…

How do you know when you’ve been a parent to long?

I realized something today.  I've been a parent for far too long because I'm going around the house singing the theme songs to the kids favorite cartoons. Today,  I have been singing the theme to Phineas and Ferb. Actually,  to be more specific,  it's Perry the Platypus's entrance song. Do you ever find yourself singing or humming the songs to your kids favorite cartoons?

As the school year comes to a close

As the school year winds down,  the anxiety is increasing.  I don't don't mean my anxiety from knowing the kids will be home 24/7 either.  The kids are actually very anxious for the end of the school year. If you think about it,  when we were kids,  we became anxious for the end of the school year as well. Imagine how much more challenging that anxiety and anticipation is for a child on the spectrum. If your kids are anything like mine, life is much more challenging as summer break approaches. As an adult and parent,  I now see the value of year round school.  As a kid, I hated the idea but I can see the benefits of that schedule for my kids. Funny how time changes perspective. How…

Phoneless for my family

This auction directly helps my family Hello everyone. I've been largely absent today because I have had a few things come up that I had to address right away. Basically, we have had some expense come up that I simply cannot cover. However, I have a fix in the works that will hopefully help. As you all know, I'm a techy and I love all things android. In order to address these recent issues and better provide for my family, I've listed my New Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Sprint) on Ebay. Yes this means I will be without a phone, at least for awhile, but I'm okay with that. As part of the auction, I'm including a ton of extras, basically everything that I have to sweeten the pot. These are all things I…

How Gavin hurt his hand

If you look a few posts back,  you'll see a picture of Gavin's hand,  injured. We couldn't figure out how the heck he had done that. We weren't sure if he had done it during his meltdown or if something else had happened. They reason we were concerned about how it happened was because of the force necessary to injure his hand the way he had. We knew that he smashed his hand on the corner of his dresser but we didn't know the how and why. We wanted to know so we could better help him to avoid this injury in the future. Having said that,  I would have never guessed what had actually happened. Apparently,  Gavin was imagining being stalked by the paparazzi.  He was fighting them off…

Now we have tremors

I noticed yesterday that Gavin is experiencing some pretty severe tremors. He physically can't stop his hands from shaking. I don't know if this is something that we should be concerned with.  I mean,  it makes me really nervous but at the same time,  I don't know if it's new or has been going on for awhile. We're going to have to let the neurologist know and see what he wants to do. **Thanks for reading**        -Lost and Tired Please join our Autism Help Forum Look for "Autism Help" app at the Google Play Store Posted from WordPress for Android so please forgive any typos as auto correct and I don't get along very well sometimes.

Final Thoughts: 05/29/2012

While today has been trying,  it's over now and we have all survived together. The appointment with Dr.  Pattie went well and Gavin participated to the best of his ability. I don't know how much Gavin actually retained but the effort was made and that counts for something. Also,  Gavin's hand,  while bruised and sore,  seems to be okay. Elliott and Emmett got to spend some time with Lizze's parents while we met with Dr.  Pattie tonight. They had a lot of fun and that was awesome. The kids went down pretty easy tonight and Lizze and I are watching the movie Insidious. Not very relaxing but fun nonetheless. As we approach the middle of the week,  I'm hoping to be able to finish the week on a high note…
