#Autistic Works of Art: The Dragon

Gavin spent about an hour at home this afternoon.  While he was home, he shared with us something that he drew and then painted.  It's this really cool Asian dragon. He did a really good job and I'm quite impressed.  I wanted to share this with you all and show you what he did.  :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. #Autism: Please don’t judge

Today, while at therapy with the boys, I was reminded of something that I have lost sight of.  I watched as this little boy, maybe 5 years of age,  struggled with having his shoes and socks put back on after his session  was done.  He appeared to be nonverbal and was clearly agitated.  I thought the PT did a really good job of redirecting him. The little boy just kept trying to brush his own bare feet and was refusing to put his shoes and socks back on.  The PT was communicating with him via spoke words and also ASL. I was instantly transported back in time to when Emmett was nonverbal and we struggled with everything.  I had to fight back the tears as I watched this little boy…

Is it ever bad to be positive?

Perhaps this sounds like a really dumb question and maybe it is. However, it's one that I'm going to ask anyway. Can it ever be bad to positive? The reason I ask is because we are involved in a program called Wraparound.  This program helps families to locate and obtain resources that are vital to a families survival.  It's a really good program and would recommend it to others in need.  Having said that, Wraparound is built around being positive.  I can't remember how they actually word that but you get the point.  Basically, the program focuses in the positives and celebrated the victories.  This isn't a bad thing.  However, what about the times when there isn't really a positive? Let me give you an example. At our last Wraparound…

Is there anything more fun than this?

Emmett has discovered TNT inside of Minecraft.  We've spent hours laying TNT down and then blowing it up.  Our goal is to blow up the entire world as much as possible...... Oh the joys of being a child in the 21st century.  :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. Melatonin, how I miss thee

Last night was a complete disaster.  Elliott couldn't sleep and so around 10pm he came downstairs and laid down on the couch. Lizze had already gone to bed and so I just decided that the best chance of anyone getting any sleep was to crash on the couch with Elliott. It took about an hour or so but he finally fell asleep. I don't know at what point we were joined by Emmett but I woke up smashed into the back of the couch.  Emmett had woken up at some point and realized that Elliott and I were sleeping on the couch and just had to join us. My back is killing me this morning and Lizze has an 8:30am  appointment. It's going to be a long day today.  I…

Today’s #Autism Victory: Playing Nicely

This morning, Emmett went back to my parents house to hang out with Elliott and my Mom, who were baking. When they arrived home in the afternoon,  the boys have been getting along wonderfully.  They got along for the entire day.  :-) This hasn't happened in awhile and it was really nice to see.  Great job boys.  Daddy is so friggin proud of you.  :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. The silent servicemen

I wanted to share an experience that Lizze and I had yesterday.  The reason I'm sharing this with you is not to call attention  to what we did, but instead call attention to what we experienced. Yesterday, Lizze and I tried to celebrate a belated Valentines Day.  The boys were at my parents and we had the house to ourselves.  I think any parent can understand the appeal to having a quite house every once in awhile. However, where your an #Autism parent, you appreciate it a whole lot.  Lizze and I had decided to grab some take out as neither one of us had the energy left to cook anything to eat. We ended up at a local Chipotle and found ourselves in a rather long line.  In front…
