#Autistic Works of Art: Finger Painting pt 3

I wanted to share another piece of Emmett artwork.  This is another finger painting masterpiece that he made.  It's always really cool for me to see what his beautiful mind cooks up.  This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. To all the haters: Why are you so quick to judge?

I realize that by putting myself out there like this, I open myself up to people's opinions. Usually, I do think have a problem with hearing what my readers think. In fact, I actually like hearing from people and learning what they think.  Many times, I'm met with incredible insight and amazing advice. Having said that, recently there seems to be a great deal of negative, to the point I actually made my YouTube channel private. You would not believe the hateful comments I received from people who took the videos out of context and failed to see what I was trying to do.  I didn't even respond to them and even stopped reading them altogether. I even get comments from people on the blog who read one or two…

Today’s Victory: No kids

I wanted to let you all know that we actually have had a night to ourselves.  The boys are at their grandparents and Emmett is still there and we haven't gotten a phone call that he wants to come home. I don't know what it is with him but sometimes he'll stay the night and other times he won't.  We did absolutely nothing tonight.  Lizze was working on her blog and I watched a movie. It would be nice to go out every once in awhile but we'll humbly take what we can get....and be grateful for it. At 10 pm, I was in bed and trying to fall asleep. I should be able to sleep in and take everything really slow in the morning.  :-) This site is managed…

How can you tell that your child with #Autism is happy?

I expect that this question will be answered differently by different people.  As Autism is a dynamic condition, everyone is affected differently. Because of this difference, I can imagine that it may be challenging for some families to understand what their child with Autism is feeling. This is especially true with nonverbal children. Before Emmett began to speak, it was heartbreaking because we never really knew what he was feeling.  Honestly, even now, after he's gained language, it's still a challenge to understand where he's coming from at times. We learned to interpret the noises he would make and it helped us to gauge how he was feeling in the absence of the spoken word.. How do you know what your verbal or nonverbal child with Autism is feeling? Have…

What do you want most for your child with #Autism?

As parents, we always want what's best for our kids.  When you are a special needs Parent, and you child is autistic, things aren't always that cut and dry. We hear alot of people talking about success or independence, in regards to our children's future, but what does that even mean? When it comes down  to it, what do you want most for your child's future? I've given this a great deal of thought over the years, especially in regards to Gavin.  I know in my heart that Elliott and Emmett will do well as they get older. Gavin in the other hand,  faces challenges that few other people face, especially at such a young age.  Between Gavin's fragile health and complex and sometimes scary mental health, Gavin’s future is…

What is your purpose?

What is you purpose? Sounds like a weird question, doesn't it? However,  when you break it down, it's actually a pretty good question. I've always felt like everyone in this world has a calling, something they were put here to do. I'm asking what you were put here to do? I've thought about this myself, many times over the years, especially when life took yet another unexpected turn. When I was younger, I thought I had everything all figured out.  My late grandmother always said that I was meant for something truly profound.  My teachers used to say that they expected to read about me in the news papers or hear about me on the news. I always felt sorta pressured by that notion because it felt like unless I…

Animals and #Autism

This morning, I dozed off on the couch and at some point was apparently joined by Bella.  She can definitely be annoying at times but she really is the sweetest puppy in the world.  I can see why Emmett has bonded so intensely with her.  :-) Animals can have such an amazing impact on the life of an Autistic child.
