The magic of redirection

I wrote in an earlier post about how hard of a time Emmett has been having this past weekend. We tried taking advantage of the almost 70°F weather and got both him and Elliott to the playground. That worked for a short time but once we left, things went down hill again. After we got home, I decided to try redirecting Emmett by taking him and the tortoise outside in the the yard.  It was warm enough for a short trip for our yet to be officially named Russian Tortoise. Emmett actually had a good time and enjoyed watching him crawl around  in the grass.  Emmett informed me that he wanted to get fast candy for Christmas.  I asked him what that was and he explained that it's a power…

Living in Downtown Meltdownville

I feel like Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ. However, the tornado that came through was named Gavin and we were all sucked up and magically transported to the land of Meltdownville. Mr. Emmett John has been melting down all day long.  Lizze and I even took the boys to the playground to get some wiggles out and that didn't even help much.  Emmett melted down in the grocery store, in the parking lot and the car ride home.  He melted down in the house,  on the porch and the front lawn.  I haven't seen him like this in awhile. In fact, the last time was when Gavin was home for Christmas break.  Meltdownville is not a fun to visit, let alone live in.  My heart breaks for Emmett because…

I need your help to compile a database of local #Autism community resources

In my never ending quest to improve the lives of special needs families, I've decided to begin compiling a list of local community resources.  Here's what I'm doing.  I'm collecting information about local community resources for special needs families.  Things like early childhood intervention, psychological care, pediatricians, dentists, therapists (Ot, PT, Speech), children's hospitals, government agencies etc.  These will be broken down by State and County.  My goal is to obtain this information in pdf form so that I can host it directly from my server and make it available for download/printing. By simply listing the information, I am in no way endorsing any of these organizations, unless otherwise stated. Please help me to help special needs families across the USA. As I have readers from almost every country around…

Is anyone in your house easy to please?

Something occurred to me the other day and I meant to bring it up then.  I can sometimes get so caught up in the routine of things that I don't always see the obvious. I sometimes make the comment that I wish someone in my house was easy to please. I cam sometimes find myself frustrated with having to tippy toe around all the unique and challenging needs of my family. Anyway, I realized that there is a living being in my house that is truly easy to please.  That would be our Russian Tortoise, whom we have never been able to decide on a name. Every morning when I wake up and walk down the steps, he makes his way out of his sleeping hole and in my direction.…

The Emotional Hangover

I was trying to describe what we were all going through, since Gavin left the other day. Lizze in particular is the most profoundly affected by this and has basically been sleeping all day. One of my newest readers had an excellent comment on that post and she explained how she could relate to Lizze.  She called what Lizze was experiencing, an emotional hangover. What an amazingly accurate description.  I shared the comment with Lizze and she was elated that someone was able to relate to what she was experiencing. She was really happy to be able to put a descriptive phrase to what she was experiencing. What we will forever dub as the emotional hangover is basically when you have experienced something good or bad, that was so completely…

I fu@king hate the time change

I write about this every year because I really truly hate.  Today we are Springing Forward. I'm not opposed to gaining some extra daylight as we make the lush towards warmer months.  The problem I have is the inevitable disaster that will be facing my kids. This always happens because their biological clocks will fight to the death in opposition of the time change and their schedules will be thrown off.  We see a couple of things happen as a result of either moving the clocks ahead or back. The first huge problem is bedtime.  They always have a hard time sleeping after the time change. Subsequently  they also have a hard time getting up in the morning.  The boys will also be a bit cranky as well. Sometimes this…

Today’s #Autism Victory: At least they’re getting along. Right?

I don't think this really needs much dialog as the  visuals should speak for themselves.  However, despite all the mess you see in front of you, they are getting along. Right now, that's a victory.  I mean there's no way they could have accomplished this mess without resorting to teamwork.  Great job boys.  :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile.
