Confessions of an #Autism Dad

I want to apologize for being so hit and miss as of late. We're kinda going through a really rough time and I've been and still am, sick. I've got a few really cool things in the works for the month of April and that’s taking up a bit of my time. There is just so much going on anymore and I'm really overwhelmed. As you likely already know, on top of everything we have going on with Lizze and the boys, I'm struggling with depression. Having been on medication for awhile now, I'm doing better than if I hadn't talked to my doctor. However, at the same time, medication doesn't just make depression go away. There's no question that the right medication can help but it's still a ton…

I want to talk about the Person First Language

By now, I would imagine that we have all heard about the person first language. Basically, the premise of this is that you put the person before the disorder. As I understand it, addressing someone in the person first language would go something like this.  This is my son Johnny, he has Autism. The point is that some people feel that if you were to say something like, This is my son Johnny  and he's autistic, or This is my Autistic son Johnny, that you are identifying them by the disorder and not who they are as a person. To me, I've always felt this was really silly and honestly, kinda petty. If you speak to an adult with Autism, more often than not they prefer to be called Autistic.…

Operation Hope: Today’s Wraparound Meeting

We have another wraparound meeting this morning. Unfortunately, I'm going to miss it due to being sick and Lizze not wanting me to get worse. Lizze will be attending as a representative for both of us. Emmett and I are going to chill out on the couch and spend some quiet time together this morning. At today's meeting a few things are going to be discussed. For starters, we will need to make arrangements in the next few days because when Lizze's aunt passes, her Mom may need some time to grieve her sister and perhaps, Gavin would be better off at home. We also need to talk about Gavin's sleeping at school. Lizze will go do a great job of addressing these concerns, as always. I'll let you all…

Is this a crisis?

I spoke with Gavin this afternoon and he informed me that he had a drop in his heart rate today...but it went back to normal....well normal for him anyway. My Mom called to let me know that Gavin has been telling her that he is falling asleep in class again.  Apparently, he feel asleep for an hour yesterday and a few minutes today. Gavin assumed that it was his medications that were the cause but that's not the case. The medications that did change are not responsible for this. Gavin told me,  "I was so tired in art class that I couldn't pick my head up off my desk". That's a problem because it's less about being tired and a whole lot more about being in another autonomic crisis. While…

Time To Speak Up: What do you want from #Autism Awareness Month?

This is a pretty straight forward question.  What do you want to see happen, as a result of #Autism Awareness Month? It's really important that we let our voices be heard. Don’t mess with my kids!

While we were on the way home from picking Elliott up at school, we had an incident. We pulled up next to a school bus carrying kids from Elliott's school. Next thing I know Elliott's really upset because one of the kids on the bus took a wad of chewed up gum out of their mouth and pelted it at our van.  It hit near Elliott's window and got him really upset. We called the school and spoke with the office about the incident because if this kid were to do this to the wrong person, it could be trouble, especially where we live. The school asked for a discription of the child and this is where I was floored. Elliott provided a very, very detailed description of this kid…

I’m excited to find out how his day went

Lizze is visiting with her aunt and my Mom came and picked up Mr. Emmett John so I could sleep. I have to be up in about an hour or so because I have to go get Elliott from school. I'm excited to find out how his day went.  My hope is that he actually ate his lunch today.  This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Packed lunch and needed prayers

Good morning everyone.  I hope your morning in going is going as well as can be expected.  On my end, things are going okay. I'm still sick and feeling really worn out. However, Elliott got off to school this morning without any problems. I packed his lunch for him and he's really excited to be making this change. I hope that this will encourage him to eat lunch. I would also like to ask a favor from all of you. Lizze will be visiting her aunt at some point today.  Her aunt has reached the end of a very long and bravely fought battle with cancer. Lizze is very, very close to her aunt and is taking this about as well as anyone could be expected to.  Please keep Lizze,…
