Has #Autism Awareness been an epic fail in your hometown?

I've been meaning to ask this but always forget. Do you find that your hometown, city, village or whatever, is Autism Aware? The reason I ask is because I find myself really frustrated because the city I call home, isn't...at all. I live in Canton Ohio, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  We have absolutely no Autism Awareness in my town.  This is extremely frustrating and even offensive because they're already talking about this year's Hall of Fame Week. I don't know what I have to do to get someone's attention.  I've written emails to our local newspaper, without ever receiving a response.  I've taken to Facebook and Twitter and offered to help in anyway that I can. Not one single response. Our local newspaper, the Canton Repository,…

I told you I hate Mondays

This morning,  Emmett broke his glasses.  It was bound to happen at some point but it took a few months to happen.  He actually broke the frame and ripped the screws out.  It finally happened today......on a friggin Monday. :-( I told you that I hate Mondays.  This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Do you hate Mondays as much as I do?

Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. That someone is Elliott and it's only made worse by Emmett constantly pushing his buttons.   I've been trying to work with Elliott on not reacting to Emmett but he's to emotionally volatile to not react right now.  I'm really getting concerned that Elliott is getting into a worse and worse place as time goes on.  He's like an emotional sponge and seems to absorb all the emotion around him, both good and bad.  The other concern is that the anti-anxiety medication isn't working, so we're going to check into how we safely discontinue using it.  We don't want him on meds if they aren't going to work. I hate Mondays, I really truly do.  I don't know why…

Today’s IVIG Infusion: Change of plans

Gavin has his IVIG infusion in the morning at Akron Children's Hospital.  Lizze or myself was supposed to be taking him.  Unfortunately, Lizze is not in a very good position to do that tomorrow.  She's also not in a good position to stay back with Emmett either.  She's absolutely miserable and trying to cope with her almost 16 month old migraine, worsening hot flashes and her typical fibro pain... Anyway, Lizze's Mom is going to take him in the morning so that he can get this done.   She's happy to do so and we are very, very grateful. In the morning, I will begin my push for answers by getting in touch with Gavin's autonomic specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and update him as to what's going on with Gavin.…

My kids are driving me crazy

This was supposed to post on Sunday morning but for some reason, it never did. Better late than never. Since the moment they woke up this morning (6am), the boys have been fighting, damn near nonstop. It's driving me friggin crazy.  Lizze is having a rough time so I let her sleep until about 10:30 am.  She needs and deserves the rest.  The boys are literally fighting over everything.  Emmett has been pushing Elliott's buttons and Elliott doesn't grasp the concept of ignoring Emmett's attempts to make him mad. For a four year old, Emmett is quite gifted in the art of button pushing, especially when it comes to Elliott. I probably shouldn't say that because I need to discourage this behavior. But seriously, he's really good. As soon as…

Early menopause. Are you kidding me?

Some of you may remember from awhile back, that there have been concerns about Lizze going into early menopause. Lizze was adopted and so her medical history is a bit of a mystery.  One of the things we do know with relative certainty is that early menopause is something that her biological mother experienced. Those of you that have been around awhile might also remember that Lizze have a complete hysterectomy a couple of years ago.  Things with her internal mommy parts weren't going well for her and after several consultations with multiple doctors, it was decided that she had to have a complete hysterectomy for medical reasons. They took everything but her ovaries. For some time now, there has been concern that Lizze was going through early menopause.  Lizze…

Seven ways to discipline your child

Lizze and I stumbled across this video on YouTube last night.  They show you seven ways in which you can discipline your child.  It's friggin hilarious but not something I would recommend you use with your ASD child.  Is it wrong that part of me wants to try this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQXg-ng_osM This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. #Fit4Autism and today’s progress: 04/14/2013

I finally made it out to the track again today after a few days off, due mostly to weather. As a special needs father, I have to work extra hard to get time to take care of myself.  It's not easy at all but it's a very necessary evil. For those wondering how I can possibly find the time to get out and walk, this is how it typically goes.  This usually happens one of two ways.  If Lizze is having a good day and is walking with me, my Mom usually hangs out with the boys.  However, if Lizze isn't having a good day, like today, the gs work out much differently.  Basically, I have to time my workout in between Lizze's scheduled times to take her medication. Her…
