#Autism, #SPD and Mealtime Difficulties

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of parenting a child with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder, at least for me, is feeding them.  While Gavin was absolutely impossible to feed when he was younger, he's no longer a picky eater and is quite easy to feed and prepare food for.  My other two, Elliott and Emmett are very difficult to feed at mealtimes.  In Elliott's case, he's always finding something wrong with the way things tastes.  There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason either.  Seemingly out of nowhere, something he's eaten for a very long time, will begin to taste funny.  He will literally go hungry before eats something that he feels tastes funny. Unfortunately, for him, with a recent diagnosis of allergies to treenuts, his options…

With any luck…….

Thankfully, the boys slept straight through the night.  I slept on the other couch and Lizze slept upstairs because it was physically best for her.  I slept pretty well but got up with the boys, bright and early at 6am. When Lizze woke up, I was able to go lay down for a few and that was awesome.  Right now I'm waiting for a few phone calls, Dominion East Ohio Gas being one of them.  I need to confirm the payment amount and the hold time is almost 2 hours.. I need to actually speak to someone or else I would simply log in online.  With any luck, I will be able to report that the gas has been turned back on, by this evening. This site is managed via…

Confessions of a depressed #Autism Dad: I’ve been better

This has been a really challenging week for me personally. I did quite a bit of driving and sat through my share of appointments, including Gavin's IVIG infusion for May. There's a lot going on with Lizze right now and honestly, she's not in a good place.  For me right now though, I just can't stop worrying about Gavin. I mean, I'm worried about Lizze as well but we know what we are dealing with and have a plan for addressing it.  With Gavin there's just nothing but the great unknown. At the very least, we know for sure that he's not doing well.  We know for sure that he's continually getting worse. We also know that his immune system is becoming more compromised and his neurological dysfunction is impacting…

I just remembered there’s no school on Monday

We just remembered that there is no school in the morning.  I believe it's a teacher in service thing but it's also a well deserved break for the teachers. I'm not entirely sure what's going on with Gavin but I believe he's going to work with Lizze's Mom. This actually works out pretty well because it's really tough to sleep tonight. We don't need to worry about getting up super early.  We opted to camp out in the living room cause it was more fun for the boys.  Hopefully, we'll get the week off to a good start... :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. The lighter side of #Autism: Mother’s Day

While the boys have had a really long weekend, especially with Gavin spending the night they did pretty well today. We spent Mother's Day at my parents house and the boys did really, really well. They spent the time building race tracks and little towns.  I love it when they get along and it was a really nice Mother's Day gift.  Lizze's migraine was really bad today and not having the boys screaming at each other is always a good thing and well appreciated by Lizze.  This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Turning a bad situation into a positive one

The good news is that we should be able to get our gas turned back on Monday or Tuesday.   The bad news is that thanks to Ohio weather, it's going below freezing tonight.  I think this is a bit unusual for May, even in Ohio. We are getting prepared for this though.  Our parents have helped us to get things straightened and my parents are dropping off some space heaters. I think we are all going to hunker down in our room tonight. We don't want to put a space heater in the boys room so we're gonna have a camp out, with tons of blankets and the heaters in our room.  Our goal is to make this as much fun as possible. We are going to try our very…

Happy Mother’s Day 2013

I wanted to take a second and wish my amazing wife and all the Mothers in my life, both online and in person, a very happy mothers day.  Lizze doesn't usually like to celebrate Mother's Day as it's the day after the anniversary of her grandmother's passing.  We keep it simple.  Not only is simple inside our budget, it's also what Lizze wants.  It's her day so we are happy to oblige. Today, all she wants to do is sleep, so that's what she's doing right now and appears to be quite happy, cozy and warm.  In truth, I think that Mother's should be celebrated more than once a year.  I mean, honestly, where would we be without our Mom's? I hope you all have a day that is peaceful…

It’s friggin cold in here

I woke up this morning to a house that is freezing.  We haven't been able to get the gas turned back on yet and of course, it's 38°f outside right now.. The soonest we can get the gas turned back on is Monday or Tuesday. The boys and I are buried under a pile of blankets on the couch and Lizze is snoozing away under a pile of blankets in bed. It's kind of fun to be snuggled under a pile a blankets, with my kids and watching some Ultimate Spiderman on Netflix.
