You may recall that I had to get Lizze to the Cleveland Clinic very early today, and because of that, the kids spent the night with their grandparents. I also previously mentioned that Lizze and I were going to have an official date night last night, something we rarely get to do.

We sometimes grab takeout and watch movies at home but we almost never go on official dates and that sucks. For us, an official date is something like going to dinner and a movie. It just doesn’t happen very often. In fact, I think last night was the first time this entire year that we were able to do something like this.

While we were debating what movie to see, it came down between The Lion King and Spider-Man.

I was leaning towards The Lion King personally because while I obsessively watch every Marvel movie, we usually see them with the kids and they have been chomping at the bit to see the new Spider-Man movie. I haven’t been in a place to taken everyone because it can get expensive taking five people to the movies.

We ultimately decided on Spider-Man because Lizze really wanted to see it and by the way, I totally love that about her. 🙂

While we don’t ever want to lie to our kids, we certainly weren’t going to tell them we went to see Spider-Man without them. We debated about whether or not we should feel guilty. I mean, if they asked us directly, we’d be honest but we weren’t going to volunteer anything and we would pretend we were seeing it for the first time if we took them to see it later.

I thought it was a foolproof plan.

We saw the movie, loved it and while we didn’t make it to dinner because Lizze wasn’t feeling well, it was a great time.

Lizze and I agreed that we shouldn’t feel guilty about going to see it without the boys because we need to do things on our own sometimes. I feel like we were trying very hard to convince ourselves that we’re both adults and can choose to see a movie without our kids.

We woke up bright and early this morning to head to Cleveland for Lizze’s appointment. As I was getting on the freeway, Lizze received a very angry call from Mr. Emmett. He was not happy that we went and saw Spider-Man without him.

Lizze and I were both in shock because our dirty little secret had been discovered. I know I wrote about the movie and posted a picture of the tickets, but my kids don’t read this blog and aren’t on social media. There’s no way he should know anything about this unless someone else read the post and filled the kids in. Who do we know that reads the blog, has direct access to our kids and could have thrown us under the bus like that.. 🤔

We spent a few minutes listening to Emmett rant about all the ways it was wrong of us to do that. He was upset but also joking around. It was like he knew we already felt guilty about it and was going to make us sweat it for a little while before letting us off the hook. He’s only 11 years old but is very capable of doing that. 😂

When all was said and done, we learned that he found out when he saw the reminder on his phone this morning about the movie.

Turns out that when you order tickets online through the Cinemark app, it automatically adds the movie and time to my Google Calendar, which just happens to be shared amongst the five of us. I had forgotten about that. In the past, when we ordered advanced tickets for a movie, the movie got added to our calendar because it was a few weeks out still. Apparently, they add to your calendar even when you buy the rickets a few hours before the movie starts.

That calendar reminder was ultimately our downfall. If I had deleted the entry, we would have gotten way with everything and our dirty little secret would have remained just that, a secret.

And you’ll see it with the kids anyway, so no big deal.
