I’m taking my 3 #Autistic kids to the dentist this morning

Later this morning, I’ll be taking all 3 boys to the dentist. If that weren’t challenging enough, I may be doing this alone. Lizze was sick for most of the day yesterday and I’m not sure how she’s doing today. I know she wants to go but there’s only so much she can do. I’m not super thrilled about this but we’ll figure it out.

I don’t anticipate any issues while at the dentist.

The only one I know who has a potential problem is Emmett. He recently lost a tooth with a metal cap. The tooth behind it appears to have been damaged by the metal cap. It’s hard to describe but it’s only a baby tooth, so I don’t expect them to aggressively do anything.

Emmett isn’t in any pain, as far as I know.

Anyway, their dentist is out of town and it takes about 30 minutes get there. I’m hoping we can make this quick and painless because these guys will be very quickly overwhelmed, overstimulated and primed for meltdowns.

Even if anyone needs work done, it won’t happen today. We’ll have to schedule that out or the future.

As many parents are already aware, kids with Autism can have a very difficult time brushing their teeth and often times hate the dentist. This can be for a number of reasons but the more common one is sensory related. There’s absolutely nothing about the dentist that’s sensory friendly. We struggle with sensory related issues in our home and while the kids brush their teeth, they absolutely hate doing so.

They each use Sonic Care toothbrushes because I figure it gets us the most bang for the buck. If they halfass brush their teeth, it’s better to halfass brush their teeth with a Sonic Care than with a manual. Emmett has recently been unable to tolerate the pulsation and therefor uses it like a regular toothbrush but we’re working on it.

Anyway, I think this is the big thing we have on the schedule for the week. Once we get through this, we should be in good shape. Knock on wood.

I’m feeling pretty good about today because the boys are in a good-ish place and no one is openly expressing fear or refusing to go. At this point, I’ll take what I can get. ☺
