We got a bit of really good news today. You may remember that Gavin was scheduled for an abdominal MRI today in order to take important measurements of his main vessels and arteries. This is really important because there’s concern that Gavin may have the vascular form of Ehlers-Danlos and that would not be a good thing.

On his paternal side, there is a family history off aortic disections and we need to keep tabs on him to ensure that he’s not showing any signs of thinning.

Insurance had denied this particular MRI but approved the one for next week of his chest.

I know his doctors were working on it but having not heard back yet, we figured the appointment was canceled. MRI’s are insanely expensive and without insurance, the appointment couldn’t happen.

…..or so we thought.

I received a phone call from Akron General, now part of the Cleveland Clinic and they wanted to know if we’d heard back about the appeal yet. I explained that we hadn’t and that it was our understanding that the appointment was canceled as a result.

Apparently we were wrong about that. Not only does the appointment stand but Akron General is making sure he gets the MRI, even if insurance doesn’t pay for it. In other words, if Gavin’s insurance doesn’t cover the cost, they have ensured it will take place anyway and without us having to worry about anything.

I don’t even know what to say. Thank you doesn’t quite seem like enough.

I believe that insurance will ultimately cover the cost because this is medically necessary. That being said, if they don’t, we no longer have to worry about be buried by the cost of having this done anyway.

We are grateful beyond words and I will pay it forward when and where I can.
