One of the things I stress to parents is that perspective is an amazing thing.  Even the slightest shift in perspective can yield a dramatically different outlook.

Cat Poop for Breakfast

We took Emmett to Dennys this morning for breakfast.  We rarely get to do this but today he was asking for sausage patties,  so we thought we would get him out for a little bit after taking the boys to school.

Emmett is experiencing a very independent streak at the moment. So after we were seated,  he insisted on ordering for himself.

I ordered a bowl of oatmeal and Lizze ordered some eggs and toast.

Then it happened, and this is how it went down:

Emmett:  I order

Daddy: Emmett tell her what you would like to have.

Waitress: What can I get for you sweetheart?

Emmett: sausage

Daddy: He’s saying sausage

Waitress: Sausage? Would you like………

Emmett: and… cat poop….

Daddy/Mommy: Emmett John!!

Waitress:  (laughing)

Emmett: Sausage, cat poop and cat pee….please (said with a big smile)

Waitress: Kids retain the most bizarre things and share them at the worst possible time.

Not that it needs to be said but there will always be that one person that will be concerned. We have not, nor will we ever, feed any of our kids, any kind of poop or pee…..just so we’re clear. 🙂

With that said, we have, at times, while trying to help the kids decide what they want to eat, thrown in the occasional bizarre thing like, cat poop or cat pee.

This was totally meant to be a joke or to simply help them choose, by offering them something, we thought, they would not want to eat. It would always make them giggle.

However, clearly this has had an unintended affect….

This was the highlight of my day:-)

Many parents may have been embarrassed but I’m grateful that he was able to even say that he wanted sausage,  cat poop and cat pee,  in the first place. This time last year,  I didn’t know if he would even speak.

Everything is a matter of perspective, instead of being embarrassed by his words,  I’m embracing them for what they really are…..progress.

HAHA that is too funny b/c we too do the same thing. Whenever we ask Sayge what she wants to eat and she says "I don't know" I always go "Would you like some cat poop?" She usually just laughs and says "Mommy that's gross." However, the funniest part about this post is that Mike told me once "One day you're going to say that so much that when she is at school or a friends house and they ask her what she wants to eat she's going to say you got any cat poop? And then the sherriffs are going to come with children services." LMAO Great story! <3 my nephews

I totally agree. Being thankful for his speech is exactly how I feel when my just turned 3 year old says silly things! Thanks for sharing. I needed this after the HORRIBLE night we had here at the house. Nothing like a meltdown of having to take just 1 bite of applesauce that resulted in puking. Sigh.

That's really funny! I'm glad it gave you a new memory to treasure! And I think what makes it even more priceless is that he asked so politely and said "please". *lol* Kudos to the waitress too. 😀
