I’m always looking for ways to help raise Autism Awareness in creative ways. I used to raise awareness by building Android ROM’s for Samsung’s flagship phones and did that for a couple years. I had entire communities of nerds (myself included) on one of the most popular phone sites in the world, sharing what they learned about Autism with their families and friends. It was truly amazing.
I ran out of time for developing and so that is no longer something I’m pursuing.
I’ve begun a new venture to leverage one of the most popular types of videos on YouTube, unboxing videos, to raise awareness for worthwhile causes. I’m calling it OpeningStuff and I’ve already partnered with some amazing companies.
I’ve already been sponsored by Bose, Jabra, Sphero, Tile, Nokia and quite a few more.
The idea is to use the massive obsession with unboxing videos to also generate awareness for Autism. Below you can find the first episode, and while it’s rough, I’m hoping you’ll get the point. I will continue to improve as I feel my way through this.
My goal to briefly share information about a cause like Autism, prior to the start of the video. The companies I’m already working with seemed to like the idea and the cause.
There are a few ways I’m thinking about to integrate this educational awareness stuff into the videos:
- Text at the beginning of the video
- Giving shoutouts to organizations that do good work and sharing their links
- Briefly sharing an experience that can help people better relate to those with special needs
- Highlighting other bloggers both with and without Autism, that are trying to get their voices heard
This is going to be a work in progress but as my resources and experience improves, so will the quality of the videos.
