We’ve all heard the phrase if Mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy.. In our case it’s a bit different because it goes if Emmett ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy.
Today was a day where Emmett really, really struggled.
Everything surrounding food was tough for him and navigating through the day, while coexisting with his brothers proved very trying.
All the boys need to be able to play outside. There’s a great deal of sensory input that can be had from crashing and bashing around the yard.
Unfortunately, where we live, it’s just not something we can let them do and that breaks my heart.
Anyway, Emmett was like a very tightly wound spring, all day long. He was like a cat getting ready to pounce on something. There’s that moment before they leap onto whatever it is they’re after, where they are so tense that you can almost see them shaking. If that cat hears the slightest sound, they startle and freak out.
That’s what Emmett was like today.
When he’s like this, it tends to be the result of sensory overload and he’s teetering right on the edge.
It was like anything and everything set him off.
As tough as it can be to deal with as parents or siblings, I know it’s infinitely worse for him because he’s so overwhelmed that he just can’t function.
One of the only times that he found some peace and comfort was when he was under his 25 lb weighted blanket.
This blanket is so heavy that if I threw it at you, it would likely knock you over but it sometimes works to help him decompress.
Emmett is one of those kids that needs a great deal of pressure on him and a blanket like this can evenly distribute the weight across his body.
Do you or your family have days like this? What do you do to help make it through? I’d love to have a discussion in the comments below.
