Putting aside all of the heartbreaking events from the first part of this week, Lizze and I had to focus our attention elsewhere today. Unfortunately, it wasn’t anything super fun. 

We spent the late morning, early afternoon knee deep in IEP meetings. You heard me right. Meetings,  as in more than one.  O_o

It’s not as bad as it sounds. IEP meetings at my kids school are a breeze compared to our experience with the public school system. There’s no such thing as a fun IEP meeting. Just like there’s no such thing as a fun root canal. 

That said, I don’t really remember having too much trouble with IEP meetings at this school over the last decade.   
Today wasn’t any different, aside from doubling up on everything to get both boys done. By law, they had to be done by today, at least that’s what we were told anyway. That begs the question, why would they schedule it on the day it’s due and not before?

Anyway, the good news is that both boys are doing well. They are either at grade level or above for probably 90% of everything.

The struggles seem to be more in the area of emotional development, which kinda goes along with Autism.  

In Emmett’s case, he’s doing so well that he will no longer have an IEP and instead move to a 504 waiver. I’m not super well versed on this but I will be soon enough.  

My understanding is that basically it allows for accommodation but not adaptation. Maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, according to the school, Emmett no longer needs an IEP… 

That’s not a bad thing but at the same time, I’m not sure how I feel about this. We’ll have to see how it goes.  

Elliott will have an IEP but he’s still doing very, very well. They want to focus on a couple things with him still. As with Emmett, we’ll see how it goes and adjust if needed.  

I’m going to be completely honest. I’m not super worried about the whole IEP thing because there’s more pressing issues at the moment.  

It’s really hard to focus on things like IEP meetings when Gavin has everything going on that he does….. That said, we somehow have to make sure everyone gets what they need….
