One of the things that I have found overwhelmingly frustrating over the past few years is this constant push for Autism Awareness. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an important thing and I push for it myself.
Having said that, I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of awareness and would really like to see some action.
It’s time to put your money where your mouth is. It’s time to stop talking the talk and start walking the walk.
Awareness is really important but it’s just not enough to really help anyone. It feels more like lipservice anymore. It’s become so commercialized and like Christmas, it’s lost its meaning, at least in my opinion.
There are so many things that we can do as both members of society in general but also the autism community as well.
Instead of just Lighting it up blue, how about we do something that actually improves someone’s life, like spend time.
Instead of just screwing in a blue light bulb, how about we physically make ourselves available to those who need us.
Maybe you have a neighbor with an autistic child. You could try to spend time with that family and get a better understanding of the situation and how you can help to improve their lives. Maybe they could use help around the lawn or perhaps you could run an errand for them.
If you are a family touched by Autism, maybe you could venture out into the community with your child and perhaps even do some volunteering.
We have to be realistic, this isn’t always possible. However, think of how much this type of experience could benefit the community but also your family. This would be great real life experience and a fantastic way to introduce your child to the world and the world to your child.
Again, I realize this isn’t going to be possible for everyone but it’s something to think about.
Another huge thing that we could and should do is tap into an amazing and all too often overlooked resource. That resource is the adult autistic community. I would think that we would welcome their knowledge and experience but we don’t. That needs to change and change now.
What better way to learn and teach about autism then to have those with first hand Knowledge do the teaching.
I guess my whole point of that I really feel that Autism Awareness isn’t enough. We need Autism Action. Action could come in many forms.
I would love to see some of these big organizations take the reigns on this and use their influence to promote real change. That change should be designed to help real life people in real life ways.
Somehow, I don’t see that happening anytime soon but one can hope.
I think change is possible and it only takes one person to get it started.
