Today, I’m thrilled to share a milestone achievement in my autistic son, Gavin’s journey toward independence—a journey marked by resilience and quiet strength.

At 24 years old, Gavin faces challenges that many of us can barely fathom. Diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), his immune system is severely compromised, which means he’s highly susceptible to infections that his body struggles to fight off. To manage this condition, Gavin has adopted a rigorous medical routine that involves self-administering a crucial medication through two small needles directly into his abdomen, not once, but twice every week.

The procedure itself is daunting and time-consuming, at times taking several hours each session. It’s a testament to Gavin’s fortitude that he has managed these infusions on his own for many years, enduring the discomfort without ever voicing a complaint. It’s just part of his routine, part of what keeps him healthy.

However, today’s celebration isn’t about these regular infusions, as routine as they’ve become. Today, we celebrate a significant act of independence that marks a new chapter in Gavin’s life. For the first time ever, Gavin took the initiative to call and order his medical supplies by himself. This task, seemingly simple for most, represented a huge hurdle for him due to his nervousness and difficulty communicating over the phone.

Recognizing the importance of this step, especially as he prepares to move out and manage more of his life on his own, I helped him prepare a script. All he needed to do was read it aloud during the call. Not only did he handle the call flawlessly, but his supplies also arrived on schedule, ensuring no interruption in his treatment.

This achievement is monumental. It reflects not only Gavin’s growing confidence but also his ability to take control of his health management—an essential skill for his independence. As a parent, it fills me with immense pride to see him overcoming his fears and taking such significant steps forward.

We’re not just celebrating a successful phone call; we’re celebrating Gavin’s path toward self-sufficiency and the bright future that awaits him. Every little victory like this paves the way for bigger successes in his life. And as always, I am here, cheering him on, marveling at his resilience, and witnessing his transformation into a more independent individual. Today is a good day, a day of victory and a beacon of hope for what’s to come.

Way to go Gavin. I’m so proud of you.
