The question has been asked. How do I navigate haircuts with my 3 autistic kids. I thought since Elliott literally just walked out from getting one, we’d talk about it.
In general, haircuts are easy now but it wasn’t always that way. When the boys were little, it was a sensory nightmare. I’d put off haircuts for as long as I could because I knew how difficult it would be for the kids and everyone else involved.
There were times that I would have their hair cut really short just so it would take a little longer before we needed to return.
The boys struggled with sitting still. The noise from the electric clippers freaked them out and the little hairs that were left behind made them itch and drove them crazy.
It wasn’t until we found a local place called Kuts4Kidz that it became easier. The whole environment was more kid friendly. They got to sit on carousel horses, and watch movies. The stylists were very patient and were able to get cooperation through redirection.
As time went on, it got easier and easier. Today it’s not an issue anymore and I’m grateful for that. I simply drove them to the salon and wait in the car. They explain what they want, use my credit card to pay, and head back to the car when they’re done.
It was a process to get here but they’re doing so well and I couldn’t be prouder.
