Being a parent is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. But it’s also one of the most challenging. Sometimes it can feel like you’re constantly giving and never getting anything in return. That’s why it’s so important for parents to make time for themselves.
My Most Recent “Me Time” Story
This weekend, the boys spent some time with their grandma. They love spending time with their grandparents. While they were out living their best lives yesterday, I got some much-needed me time.
I went on my own little adventure and was able to put back into myself. Even better, I no longer feel guilty about taking time for myself or for building my own life outside of just being a Dad.
I spent some time out in nature this weekend. The weather was perfect, as was everything else. I made some core memories and put back into myself.
I watched the sunset over the Cuyahoga River, enjoyed some amazing food, and had some great conversations.
Since I’ve become a single Dad, I better understand the importance of taking time for myself. I’ve become better at it as time goes on. I won’t claim it’s an easy process to get into, but it’s totally worth it.
Why “Me Time” is Important for Parents
As a parent, you are constantly giving of yourself. You are always putting your children’s needs first, and while that is admirable, it’s also important to remember that you need to take care of yourself, too. Taking some time for yourself—even if it’s just an hour or two—can help you recharge and come back to your parenting duties with fresh energy and a better attitude.
In addition to helping you recharge, taking some “me time” can also give you some much-needed perspective. When you’re in the thick of parenting, it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. But when you take a step back and focus on your own needs, it can be easier to see things from your children’s perspective and make decisions accordingly.
Finally, taking some time for yourself can also help improve your relationship with your children. When you’re able to focus on your own needs and take care of yourself, you’re setting a good example for your children. They will see that it’s important to put yourself first sometimes, and they will learn how to do the same. As a result, your relationship with your children will be stronger and more enjoyable.
Conclusion
It’s important for parents to remember that they need to take care of themselves, too. Taking some “me time” can help you recharge, gain perspective, and improve your relationship with your children. It’s also great behavior to model for your kids. So don’t feel guilty about taking some time for yourself—your kids will be better off in the long run if you do!
