I pulled this request from one of my autism parenting support groups a few days ago. I’m just getting around to sharing it here, it’s been on Facebook for a couple of days.

Here’s the actual topic request:

This mom basically asked me to explain why even the simple things in life aren’t so simple when you’re an autism parent. I totally get this and I hope I helped.. ☺

Reading your blog over the years has taught me that things get better. Look at where your boys are now. I remember the struggles you had with what they would eat, what they would wear, the stress of going to school. They have come such a long way. To the point that you are able to go the gym and they can be by themselves. I know this took a lot of dedication and hard work on your part. You brought them to where they are now!!! Good job.

Bravo Rob! You are exactly and totally right. Dealt with all of that for going on 39 years with my son and what I call outside people. And still at times get the non understanding looks and stares. So thank you and the parent who wrote to you for bringing this to light. I would also like to add people who do not have autistic children or family who try to give you advice about how to handle your child based on how they handle their neurotypical child not realizing they are talking about something they know nothing or little about.
