Gavin said something very disturbing yesterday and this is how we’re handling it

What I think is happening is that Gavin was washing a butter knife and thinking about safety while handling the knife. Gavin’s brain will jump from that to what could happen if he wasn’t being safe while handling the butter knife. He then perseverates on those thoughts and they very quickly run away from him. That’s how Gavin operates.

As I said, we still need to take this seriously, make sure we address it in therapy and if there’s even a hint of serious concern, we need to react immediately.

We’re going to be addressing this today with Dr. Pattie.

It’s easy to overreact and it’s easier to underreact as well. We’ve been around the block a few times already and dealt with this type of thing before. I think most of this is Gavin freaking out because those thoughts popped into his head. He doesn’t like thinking about anyone getting hurt but he can’t stop thinking about it and it creates anxiety for him.

On the way home from his bloodwork yesterday, he informed me that he was having dreams once again about our house catching on fire. He’s had them a few times this year already and that bothers him.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this either.

We’re not going to overreact but we’re also going to address this right away. I am concerned about the anxiety these thoughts or dreams are causing him. He’s visibly upset by them and we need to get him help.

I will be more vigilant with him and keep a closer eye on him but he’s not celebrating the idea of us getting hurt, he’s worried about us getting hurt.

At least you have the support therapy to get through this with Gavin.
