I wanted to share with you a pretty big victory that we celebrated with Gavin recently.  As with most of you, we stride to help Gavin gain as much independence as safely possible.

Personal hygiene is something that we have been working on with Gavin and it’s been a long bumpy ride.

We’ve been working with Gavin on noticing things on his body that require maintenence and then addressing it, without having to be asked or reminded.  An example of this would be trimming his finger nails.

This has been a significant challenge for us and not only has Gavin been really squeamish but he’s never been able to trim his own nails before.

While he’s attempted this several times in the past, its always had to be fixed because he would only trim part of each nail and leave the rest.  I’m not sure what the problem was but it always happened.

Having said that, we just kept trying.

Eventually, it paid off and that payoff was today.  He trimmed his nails all by himself and they didn’t need to be touched up. Great job Gavin…  πŸ™‚

Go Gavin! *waves pompoms*

I’ve bitten my nails since I was a small child, sometimes drawing blood. Never needed to trim them.

Thanks Meaghan
