It finally happened. I’ve been working with Gavin to help him gain some independence. It’s very often disheartening because if we ever make progress, it’s usually a really slow process and one of those 2 steps forward, 5 steps back kinda a things.
Having said that, today on the way to Thanksgiving dinner, we stopped to check the PO BOX.
Gavin and I have been practicing checking the PO BOX, for a few months now. For a seemingly simple task, it’s been a really, really long process.
Today however, Gavin attempted to check the PO BOX, all by himself. We were all in the car and I pulled up to the Post Office. I asked Gavin if he wanted to check it by himself and he jumped at the chance.
The way our Post Office is set up, we could sit in the car and watch him the entire time.
Right after he went in, I snuck out and took a few pictures of him, through the window, attempting this monumental task. I don’t think he could see me.
I managed to get a picture of the enormous smile on his face after he successfully located, unlocked, removed our mail from and relocked the PO BOX, all by himself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that excited about something he’s done on his own.
He was so proud of himself and I’m so proud of him. 🙂
