About the book

Hearing the words "your child has autism" can feel like the ground shifting under your feet. The paperwork is thick. The emotions are heavy. And most parents walk out of that appointment with referrals in one hand, their child's hand in the other, and absolutely no idea what comes next.

This book is the companion I wish I'd had when I walked out of those offices myself — three times, once for each of my sons.

It's a practical, emotionally honest guide for parents navigating the early period after a diagnosis. It bridges the gap between the clinical facts doctors provide and the real, human experience of raising an autistic child. Drawing on more than two decades of lived experience and a global community of autism parents, the book walks you through the shock, the grief, the reframing, and the small daily practices that make this life sustainable.

It's not a medical textbook. It's not a highlight reel. It's the direct, in-the-trenches guidance of a dad who has been where you are and is still here, still showing up, still figuring it out.

Who this book is for

  • Parents whose child has recently been diagnosed with autism
  • Parents who suspect a diagnosis is coming and want to prepare
  • Extended family members, grandparents, and caregivers who want to support an autism family
  • Educators, therapists, and clinicians who work with newly diagnosed families
  • Anyone who felt dismissed, rushed, or alone in a medical setting

If you're holding paperwork and wondering how you're going to get through the week, this book was written for you.

What the spectrum actually means, escaping the comparison trap, and reading reports as baselines rather than verdicts.

Part 2

Adjusting to a New Reality

  1. 04

Processing the change, the perfectionism trap, and why presence matters more than perfection.

Meet the author

Rob Gorski

Rob is the author, podcaster, and content creator behind The Autism Dad, one of the earliest and most enduring autism parenting platforms on the internet.

His journey began when his oldest son, Gavin, experienced sudden global regression at age four. Over the years, all three of his sons would be diagnosed with autism, each presenting completely differently. What started in 2009 as a private blog where Rob unloaded his thoughts to keep from being swallowed by despair became, by accident, one of the first public resources for parents raising autistic children.

Today, Rob reaches a combined audience of more than 750,000 across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and his twice-weekly podcast. His work has been featured on CNN, ABC News, BBC Worldwide, the Tamron Hall Show, and Entrepreneur Magazine.

A former fire medic, Rob lives in Northeast Ohio, where he and Kelly are raising their kids together. He writes with the directness of someone who has lived every page of this book.
